Someone just asked me….”sooo…what did you do last weekend?” This last weekend was the Cloud Robotics Hackathon put on by RobotShop in Montreal. They were promoting their robotics cloud at www.myrobots.com. Here is the website for the hackathon: www.roboticshackathon.com.
If you signed up early enough, they would give you a free robot kit to hack. The whole point of the Hackathon was to develop a robotics demo using their cloud, and submit a 3 minute demo video of what you did. Brandon, Bob and I signed up…although not early enough to get a free robot. We used our Oddwerx smartphone robot we have been showing around as the base, added some stuff to it, and used the cloud to play Tic-Tac-Toe as a virtual avatar. We had from Friday night until 1pm Sunday to do the hack, and submit the video. Due to Brandon’s heroic, last minute push, we finished within minutes of the deadline.

In typical HBRC style….We took 1st place for the Santa Clara / Silicon Valley region. The prize? A T-shirt. Cool!
They haven’t announced the global winners yet.
The event was held at the Citrix Startup Accelerator in Santa Clara. It was a really nice space. We asked the head guy if we were ever in a pinch for a meeting space some month, if we could have HBRC there, and he seemed open to it. So….something to keep in the quiver if we need it. We also got the word out to many of the participants who hadn’t heard of the club to encourage them to come….so hopefully we will have more people at the meeting this month.
