Some quick comments about high current H-bridges:
1) Most club robots do not need them. Indeed, the only robots
that really need them are probably competition grade battlebots.
If you think you need one, you should post your robot goals to
the list to get some feedback. I doubt that anybody that was
at the SIG meeting last night needs a high power H-bridge.
2) If you do need a high current H-bridge, you should seriously
consider just buying one. The HB-25 from parallax is a
reasonable place to start. Be forewarned that many of the
high current motor drivers out there have great spec. sheets,
but when you actually try to get them to perform at spec., they
do not cut the mustard.
3) Chuck has forgotten more about high current H-bridges than I will
ever know. That said, the URL below is just scratching the surface.
The heat sink design is just as important as the electronics design.
Any reasonable high current H-bridge should have a hard current
limit circuit. (Running the current sensor into a microcontroller
A/D is probably not going to be fast enough.) Also, there should
be a thermal sensor on the heat sink so that the H-bridge can be
turned off for thermal overload.
