Subject: Hoverflies
Hi

As a southerner visiting family in NW Sutherland (Kinlochbervie), I
try to look at different species locally. So, over the years, I have
ringed some good birds, like Rosefinch and Red-backed Shrike, have run
a moth trap some years, but this year looked for hoverflies. It was a
bit too windy, to be honest, but i did collect the following species
on the Machair at Oldshoremore, in 2 hours, one morning last week...

A quick summary of catch at Oldshoremore 26 Jul 2008

Taxa
4612  Melanostoma mellinum  1
4624  Platycheirus manicatus  2
4663  Epistrophe grossulariae  2
4667  Episyrphus balteatus  100
4670  Eupeodes corollae  10
4679  Leucozona glaucia  1
4681  Leucozona lucorum  2
4706  Scaeva pyrastri  1
4722  Syrphus ribesii  10
4723  Syrphus torvus  50
4724  Syrphus vitripennis  20
4743  Cheilosia illustrata  30
4746  Cheilosia latifrons  1
4782  Lejogaster metallina  1
4816  Eristalis pertinax  10
4823  Helophilus pendulus  5

Numbers are rough estimates...will heve been much higher for some
species. All were collected from Hogweed or Ranunculus spp.

Also that week, there were large numbers of Scotch Argus around
Scourie and at the small wood at the west end of Loch a Bhadaidh
Daraich (NC 173445) there were over 50 Crossbill, with many young
birds. Lots of Speckled wood there, too. Also there was the Horsefly
Chrysops relictus.
Lastly, an Osprey was fishing over the Kyle of durness on 27th July.
