I've gotten a few questions about protein powders. Sorry friends, but
most p.p. are junk foods.
Sure, it starts with a whole food -- like a soy bean. But the protein
is extracted (processed/isolated out) then usually the carbs and fats
are also processed out. then the nutrient is ground down into a powder
and often bleached (hence why soybeans are green but powders are
greyish). Then other processed or artificial stuff is added to it to
make it palatable (this is especially true with flavored powders i.e.
chocolate). There might also be artifical or even natural sweeteners
and lab-created nutrients (like fiber) added; it's a far cry from
"whole" I'm afraid.
Brown rice isn't much better and whey is much worse.
However, some raw protein powders, like Living Harvest's Hemp and
Vega's powders are just ground down raw, whole foods; so if you feel
you absolutely must have protein powder -- please choose those.
You can also add ground hemp seeds or flax seeds to your diet, or
ground them yourself into a meal or powder.
Truth be told, I rarely ever use protein powder. In fact, I haven't
yet this entire year and I had the best/hardest snowboarding season to
date. If I've had a hard work out -- I incorporate more beans and
quinoa into my diet rather than powders (just a thought for the
cleanse).
