What seems clear, though, is that happy people get a double benefit
because they are also healthier. Scoring high on psychologists'
happiness scales is linked with a stronger immune system - you
develop 50 per cent more antibodies to flu vaccines and you're less
likely to get heart disease, diabetes or have lung problems.
A key study followed 1,300 men over ten years and found that those who
rated themselves as optimistic were half as likely to develop heart
disease as the pessimists.
The lead researcher, Laura Kubzansky, assistant professor of health and
social behaviour at the Harvard School of Public Health, says: "This
provides the first hard medical evidence for the idea that positive
thinking is good for your health in the arena of heart disease." The
difference she found is as big as the difference between smoking and
not smoking.
