* family gatherings
* graduations
* births
* some personals wins - like running a race, getting a great grade in a
class in college
* training for a race, (funny I never remember studying for a test)
* cooking together for a large party, or just with friends
* some concerts or sporting events I've been to
* anything I have photos of ;-)

I'm very interested in what people remember, and what they like to
remember. What types of events are these? There may also be many not
event moments, but for now I'm asking about specific things that have
happened that you like to remember. Thanks, thanks.

interesting question!

How much time a day do we spend remembering things from the past?

I'm tempted to say I don't really dwell that much on events, more on
remembered feelings. And instead of longer memories, I remember
moments. That's kind of interesting, because in game design I tend to
emphasize a structure that builds to a certain set of moments that are
powerful, fun, or scary. And I like insights too...they are like a
critical reaction of ideas. Maybe moments for me are a critical
reaction of emotions.

Maybe I need to put more triggers up...looking around my house, most of
the things I have are directed toward the NOW or the FUTURE. I don't
have any photos on the wall, for example...something I've been meaning
to do, and I should fix that this weekend.

Occassionally, I'll drive by a sign on the highway and remember someone
who used to live there, and then I'll remember a moment or an event in
the past. Certain restaurants and foods are like that too. Other things
will trigger a desire to contact someone with some current
information...that happens a lot actually, as I've tried to train my
mind to be highly associative since the 10th grade. I guess it spills
over to people.

I tend to remember eureka moments too.

I was just realizing that I do have a lot of memories, because I write
about them all the time in my blog. I'm kind of surprised how many
there are actually...but they only come out as I'm exploring an idea. I
haven't tried exploring memories for the sake of doing that.

I have a box of things I haven't thrown away since I was a kid...I
still have it somewhere. When I do massive housecleaning, I sometimes
will find objects that I will want to save for some reason, like party
favors from weddings, or things like that. I don't know why I keep
them, other than I don't want to toss them.

THere's a show on TLC called "Clean Sweep" that I've been watching, and
they throw out lots of stuff. There's always a few things that they
don't want to throw away, like one guy who had a 1960s vacuum cleaner
that didn't work, but when he saw it he thought of his mother and his
brothers playing on it. He ended up getting a picture taken of it and
keeping that instead.

Ooops, you asked for a specific list of things, and I got all
introspective! Here's my list!

* big family events!
* Weddings. I love weddings because there's so much passion and
emotion, plus there's always interesting political stuff going on in
the background :-)
* trips to new places that were unexpectedly cool
* eureka moments, like when I realized what the perfect mindset for
learning engineering was...after I had graduated
* some weird dreams, like one scary one when I was a kid
* any time spent with special people in my life...these are the warmest
and most favorite memories.
* moments I have made personal vows: like I will become a master
programmer, or I will develop an agile associative mind
* surprises, especially social ones
* new feelings, like riding a roller coaster for the first time
* moments in which I decided to act outside the norm
* moments of nature, like being in a vast outdoor space
* moments of embarassment, failure, or falling short

I actually forget a lot of things unfortunately ... people will mention
something life changing I've said to them, and I unfortuately don't
remember saying it. I wish I did, because by not remembering I devalue
the memory a little bit for THEM, so now I just say, "wow, I said that?
Sounds good! What did you do next?" to get the focus back onto why it's
awesome.
