Hello collective wisdom . . .

Can anyone tell me what these Ted Talks are?

That being said, its supposed to be a talk that enlightens the audience in some way. Many of them are pretty cool..

One that I've watched and is relevant to most of us is Evelyn Glennie's talk on showing us how to listen.. She's a deaf percussionist..

I like this one, which is about conducting, but was pitched at an audience of corporate leaders, (note the reference to "cubicle" at the beginning) not musicians. But one which is worth any musician's time:

Then, because I don't know why, I liked this next one. Before "War Horse" was a Spielberg movie, it was theatrical production for the National Theater in London. These two guys (lovers, they mention it, don't watch it if this bothers you) developed the puppetry for that production. For some reason, the skill in this, the art-for-art's sake (i.e., they didn't HAVE to do this stuff, they were somehow gifted and driven to do it)-- WHATEVER it was, I totally fell to pieces at the appearance of the full size horse puppet near the end of this video. I admit to tears of --what? joy? delight? triumph? at the visual evidence that imagination, art, and intense collaboration could result in such an unusual and arresting folly. Fleeting, magical, not real and yet most real. Totally artificial, and yet in its own way authentic and believable. Captivating.

Well, we're in talks to do one about music in education and I'm pitching Handbells be a big part of that.

Just never really knew what a TED talk was.

TED talks are short inspirational and/or thought-provoking speeches on a vast array of subjects. The TED talk by Sir Ken Robinson about innate creativity in children and the way our public school system is destroying it is very enlightening--it's one of my favorites. Neil Pasricha also gives an excellent speech on The 3 A's of Awesome--he's a blogger who helps you to look for the simple, little "awesome" things in life that make it bearable. I love the TED app on my iPad!
