TAN: Competitive events for handbells

I performed in a high school band that went to festival every year....and
we worked like crazy to prepare: not just our performance pieces, but other
pieces, too - because there was a sight-reading section in which the entire
band was also judged. We had, I think 10-15 minutes to see it before
performance, while our director walked us through it and highlighted particular
passages.

Sight-reading could be a good balance to add to a handbell competition. It
would help reward the more flexible groups and challenge those groups
which had only practiced the target performance pieces for the year.
