HamSCI Featured in August QST Magazine

For the second year in a row, HamSCI is prominently featured in the August issue of the ARRL's QST magazine.  The issue's cover photo and sixteen pages of content are devoted to our citizen science initiative.  Thanks to the generosity of the ARRL, The National Association for Amateur Radio©, the special section can be read on the HamSCI website.

The issue consists of a feature article, The HamSCI Personal Space Weather Station HF Receiver, by Nathaniel Frissell W2NAF.

Rich Mosenson W2VU authored a detailed writeup of the 2026 HamSCI Workshop, HamSCI 2026 - Discovering Science Through Ham Radio.

A number of presenters reprised their talks and materials in An Oral Sessions Sampler, and A Glimpse of the Workshop Poster Session.

All of the content (especially the cover's stunning photo of the Neumayer III Antarctic Research Station), is well illustrated and thoroughly annotated with links to source materials and ARRL videos of the weekend's activities.

Congratulations to Nathaniel on a fine article!  I was also impressed by all the extra pages that covered HamSCI’s mission, and those contributing to it.

 

It was discussed on at least one online meet-up in which I participate.

It's great to see amateur radio's science facet given strong coverage.  That is a key part of our Basis and Purpose in the FCC rules (Part 97.1).  In the early days, amateur and professional radio had a significant overlap with amateurs supporting research programs, assisting expeditions, making observations on their own, etc.  Seeing those opportunities return is exciting and gratifying.

BTW, a lot of the technological leaps in amateur radio are chronicled in "History of QST Volume 1: Amateur Radio Technology". ($20 at https://home.arrl.org/action/Store/Product-Details/productId/114244 and also available used)  I put that book together for the ARRL Centennial and it goes all the way back to 1915.  There is some fascinating reading, including the Receiving Tests that helped determine the presence of a charged layer high in the atmosphere that returned signals to the ground - imagine that!
