Anyone annoyed with DC as much as I am? Let's meet up!

Why the hell aren't there more thrift stores, movie theaters, bowling
allies (other than Lucky Strike), record stores, and decent used
bookstores in this place? If you live in DC and feel this way, or know
how to prove me wrong, we should meet up!

Adieu for now (or forever. The response rate here seems low..),

Response rate is low because I believe all the other DC 'pinners went
off to Facebook except me (because I don't have a FB account, because
I am ninety-five), you, and...others? maybe there are others.

LET'S TALK ABOUT DC though, here or email me off-list if you want!
You are fucking right there are no decent used bookstores here. Books
for America is ok, Second Story Books is ok. When I first moved here
I catalogued for Second Story up at their Rockville store/warehouse,
which is far away and a pain in the ass to walk to from the metro and
probably as full of rats and nazis as it was when I worked there, but,
but! also vast and much more interesting than the Dupont location. So
go there at least once if you haven't already. Other than
that...maybe we could explore together sometime?

Other than that other than that, your question is very "why is DC DC"
and the answer is FUCK KNOWS. I am very shy and boring and don't like
to organize things, but on the subject of movie theaters I haven't
been to, West End Cinema is going to be showing Children of Paradise
sometime in June, which ought to be a DC Hairpin Event if anything
is. I will be at every showing because it is only the greatest movie
ever made.

Where on facebook? I've been dying to go to a DC meetup.

I console myself with the idea that if the bookstores were better, I
would be poorer. And I miss bowling because I have no interest in
going to Lucky Strike. As for movie theaters, a lot of small and
second run and arts theaters went out of business in the last decade
and a half. But West End is a great theater if you don't mind small,
irregular spaces, and Children of Paradise should totally be a Hairpin
event!

Here is the link to the DC Pinner Facebook page for those who have
been sucked into the Facebook hub: https://www.facebook.com/groups/dchairpin/
I didn't organize it, but it is fairly convenient for sharing
information. And we are probably due to organize another meet up. But
we should keep this conversation alive on the docs page if people
prefer that, too.

I miss bowling too!! Lucky Strike doesn't count even a little bit.

RE bookstores, what about that one by Eastern Market, I don't remember
the name. But I found a bunch of paperback Dorothy Sayers there once,
so I feel fondly towards it.

There's a decent bowling alley in Bethesda off River Road, but it's
not really accessible without a car. And yes, Capitol Hill Books by
Eastern Market! I'm not necessarily an expert on used bookstores, but
I like that place. (And they are responsible for the best moving
company in the city, Bookstore Movers, for your next local move...)

Dudresses!  Speaking of used goods, there is a big clothing swap in Mt Pleasant tomorrow, just around the corner from my house!  3-5pm at St. Stephen's Church (1525 Newton Street NW).  $10 per bag of stuff!  And I'm sure there are swappy options (swaptions?) too.  Anybody wanna go??

That is so good to know! I have all of these clothes that I can't
stand to wear anymore but I know would make someone else so happy! I
unfortunately have to work then, but maybe I can get out of it.

But seriously, what made me click on this was the thrift store deal -
I completely agree and have not had much success in finding a good
reliable thrift store. I have had very minor success at Martha's
Table and Secondi, both of which provided really good Brooks Brothers
scores. But I'd like to be able to find things other than Brooks
Brothers, like things to wear other than work.

I'd also like to express support for a Children of Paradise pinup/
outing.

Sure, DC isn't Chicago/NY/wherever you last lived, but that's because it's DC. No whining, plz. The only thing to complain about re: DC is congressional control of my uterus/lack of voting representation in Congress.

But yes, the FB group does seem to be where planning goes down, so you may try posting there if you have a specific thing you want to do with others. https://www.facebook.com/groups/dchairpin/

Ahh Mt P clothing swap! I'm also in the neighborhood and I've got a big bag of things that Must Go. I'd been thinking of doing a swap with friends, but this might be easier/sooner. (Although -- do you have to bring clothes to buy a bag?)

Also, hello dear kindred spirits.

Also re: Facebook, this is belated, but there's a book club meetup next week! Fun things happen!

I have a car and live really close to the Bethesda bowling alley right now and can fit 4 other Pinners in my car (tightly packed). I'd be willing to help organize a carpool from the Friendship Heights metro if we want to go bowling sometime. I need to work on my driving first though because I just moved my car up here from rural north Florida where it is decidedly less scary to drive.

Hey! I do actually have a FB account. I don't LOVE it, but I have one.
This message board is awesome though, and am pleasantly surprised by
how many responses there are! (Plus I feel kind of old school using a
message board. In a dorky kind of way.) As for Second Story in Dupont,
you're right. I went there and wasn't impressed. I think Kramer's is
the only other bookshop around town I've been to, and it's obvi not
used and really over-priced with a pretty limited selection. I'm
totally down to explore DC for bookstores, record stores, thrift, etc.
Children of Paradise at the West End sounds fun, too. I've been
meaning to get over there for a while, but still haven't. I saw
Children of Paradise once, but without subtitles so I missed a lot
(even though I was a Fr. student at the time). ANYWAYS we and other
interested Pinners should do this stuff. I've been in D.C. almost 10
months now and haven't met a ton of awesome folks, so I'm down to meet
some Pinners. Superdown.

Let's go bowling! I have a car and am willing to drive if we need
more seats....

Also, I don't think I have enough time to read the book before book
club on Tuesday, but I'm totally in for next time....

I'm on the FB group, but Monica, I agree, there's something kind of
awesome about the message board.

Hear, hear, Yay for the message board!  I would love to go bowling as well - my high school weirdly took us bowling annually and for special events and so I have fond memories of ladies' bowling.
I don't have fb at the moment but am perpetually considering a return... so I for one will be keeping up with this board for updates!

Ditto on bowling and the awesomeness of message boards over facebook!
I can fit four in my car from Tenleytown or Friendship Heights.

We should pick a bowling date -- first step, weeknight or weekend?

Also, I am a terrible bowler -- I hope all you ladies aren't super-
awesome league players. Actually, nevermind, that would be pretty
cool!

Yeah! Week-night bowling!  Also in the "no-facebook" camp, or maybe I would've recognized some of you at the swap. I got like 7 vintage silk scarves that only smelled vaguely of grandma-perfume :)
