Pinners!

I am moving to Cleveland, OH at the end of May.

Please tell me that some of you live there and we can get together and
you can show me fun things to do.

I've never been an adult in Cleveland before! I'm excited!

Oh my god Cleveland! YES! I live here! I will take you to Happy Dog (if you like hot dogs) or XYZ (if you prefer chicken and waffles).

Yes, other Clevelanders! Your post was mentioned in the Open Thread
and I hurried over to finally join the Google group. There are
definitely fun things to do, we will take you to them allll(-ish).

I am just outside Cleveland and don't get up there nearly enough.  Count me in, ladies!  I have never been to Happy Dog (though I've heard of it) or XYZ (haven't heard of it.)

I'm so glad to find out about all of you! I just moved up here in November, so I'm still learning my way around and trying to make friends, etc. Kate said something in the Friday Open Thread about karaoke...I can't sing but I can drink and laugh. :B

Also, if any of you guys like to read YA books, there's a Forever YA book club in the Cleve that meets the last Sunday of every month!

OH THAT IS THE GREATEST EVER.

Oh I am a librarian! I actually did my grad work in youth services/media specialization, although now I work for American Greetings. :( But I still spend most of my time reading YA novels. I think the book for May's book club is The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks.

For those already in Cleveland--in the Friday Open Thread there was mentioned a book release party for the Harvey Pekar: Cleveland graphic novel, which is on May 1 in Cleveland Heights. Anyone interested in going?

Hello.

We must be friends.

MUST.

Have you read CODE NAME VERITY yet? I finished it a week ago. I
started crying while brushing my teeth while thinking about it. I
can't shake this book.

I haven't got it yet! I'm waiting for it at the library. :B

I was thinking, another possible Pin-Up that might be cool would be the Tremont Art Walk? I guess it's held once a month (third Friday or some such), so maybe once the weather gets better that could be a thing to do.

Danielle, where in the area do you live? I'm closer to Parma than actual proper Cleveland.

Hey Ladies,

I just started living as an adult in Ohio a few months ago and would
love to meet some Cleveland (non-high school) friends. And... Diana,
I'm in the YA group with you! We talked about Hairpin last meeting but
I was still getting into the website. Let's all hang out! I live in
Tremont and enjoy Prosperity (it has boardgames) and Treehouse (on
weeknights, weekends tend to be a college douche central). Other than
that, I went to Happy Dogs on Dyngus Day which was insane and really
cool, and XYZ drunk later that night and enjoyed both.

Becky, mimosa and YA extraordinaire.

I am in Ravenna, next to Kent, about 45 minutes out of Cleveland.
Hmm, maybe my definition of 'just outside' is a little off. I'm not
sure about the Pekar release party but I'd love to check out the Art
Walk.

Christina, when are you arriving in the Cleve?

I'm moving from Philly to Cleveland in August or September! I hope we
can have a Pin-up or something in the Fall.

After a weekend visit, I'm thinking about renting in Ohio City. I'm
obviously looking on Craigslist, but if anyone hears of any great
places opening up, let me know.

Hellooo belated reply (email forwarding, how does it work?)

Yes, me! I'm considering the Harvey Pekar book release. Coventry is
around the corner for me, so it's just a case of actually being home.
My work hours are completely dependent on whatever project I'm on and
I'm starting a new one on Monday, so everything's up in the air.

Danielle, the ArtWalk is probably worth the drive. I'm down for an Art
Pin-Up, that would be fun.

Bonjour all,

I am arriving in le Cleve sometime around May 20/21/22ish?

And oh yay, friends, this is going to be awesome. A pinup will
certainly distract from the fact that I am quitting my job, leaving
New York City, and moving home to my mom's house.

Hold me, hairpin. Hold me close.

Hooray, more Cleveland peeps!

Since Christina will be here in mid-May, maybe we could plan for a late May/early June Pinup? I think the last roller derby match is in early June, if you guys are interested in that.

Kate (and anyone else!), I am hoping to be at the Harvey Pekar thing tomorrow, so if you see an awkward-looking short-haired lady, that is me. :B

long-haired lady :)

Derby sounds good! Christina, we'll hold you close and then maybe use
you to hip whip non-'Pinners.

I'd be up for the roller derby, never been but it looks like fun.
June 9th is the last match. Should we make it a date?

I'd also be up for doing the touristy thing, though maybe not the
Aquarium ($22 for admission??) Something like the Zoo, going to the
beach, Lake View Cemetary, going to Big Fun, all the cliche Cleveland
things. :) Not to get all corny, but meeting all of you would be
worth the drive to Cleveland.

While we're talking Cleveland Heights area, there's also the Hessler
Street Fair (hesslerstreetfair.org), which be a fun place to start
wandering around the area. Hessler's mid-May, though. It's by the art
& history museums/the Euclid entrance to Lakeview. Oh, and speaking of
the History Museum, they have parties a few times a year with varous
themes and you get to wander around the museum and drink or dance.
I've been to a couple, they're fun.

I will (I think) be taking the bus to the book release thingie tonight...longtime Clevelanders, any advice? I ride it every day to work, but that's just a fifteen minute ride. What on earth is the Health Line?

On happier topics, the Hessler Street Fair sounds awesome! I haven't been to the zoo, any of the museums, or the botanical gardens yet, either.

Kate Kane

I don't know if this is one of those things I should be embarrassed
about admitting, but I've never actually ridden the buses in my own
city. I do know what the HealthLine is, though! Even apart from "what
makes me dread driving on Euclid." It's just the busline that goes up
and down Euclid Ave and only Euclid Ave. It got a rename after they
upgraded and added more stops.

DianaH

Hmmm yes. I didn't even know Cleveland had a subway line (the Red line?). Actually, looking at this, I'm not sure I'll be able to make it. The bus trip is nearly two hours from where I live and a cab would be expensive. If I can use my boyfriend's car, I will be there; if not, have fun and we will plan an official Pin-Up!

Oof. That's a lot of busing for a short event. Well, if you make it,
yay. If not, there's the rest of the year and more Clevelanders to
meet up with. :)

I'm excited for "new" people (I was one of the ladies lamenting not
having as many women friends as she once did. I promise not to cling
*too* hard?).

Ha, I was checking email and just noticed my 'Hessler be' thing. Um,
that was bad editing on my phone, I am not a pirate.

I'm also still at work, so Diana if you did get your boyfriend's car,
I still may or may not see you.

I was wondering, should we have a Facebook group for event planning purposes? I know not everyone has a Facebook (been trying to convince myself to delete mine for ages).

Kate Kane

That would work for me. I'll be hanging on to my Facebook account for
as long as out of state friends keep using it as their only means of
keeping in touch.

Danielle

I am on Facebook and having the 'Pinup group there would work fine for
me, but this thread works fine for me as well. Soo... whatever you
all decide, ha ha.

Upcoming events we've mentioned:
Hessler Street Fair: May 19th & 20th
Last Rollerderby Match: June 9th

Another something to do: for two weeks in August, Playhouse Square
does 'Cinema On The Square', where they show older movies at the
Palace Theatre. Tickets have been only $5 in the past, as long as
I've been going, so I don't foresee that changing. They always have a
good variety of movies. You get to sit wherever you want (except the
boxes, dang it.) Something to consider.

Oh no, I actually work in the creative reference library and I do like my job a lot. I'm just hoping to get into public libraries at some point. But I'm more than happy to wait out the current squeeze here. It seems like a pretty good company to work for (just started in February).

I hope you get an interview! What department/area/job did you apply for?

DianaH

So if we want to do the final roller derby match (June 9), we could probably do food and/or drinks before or after. According to the derby website, the doors open at 5pm, June 9 being a Saturday. The Wolstein Center where the matches happen is pretty close to downtown...longtime Clevelanders, what are your preferred places for edibles in the area? I guess there are probably things like hot dogs, pretzels, beer available inside too?

Kate Kane

With downtown, the more west you are, the more restaurant options there are. But the Wolstein Center (...which is still the Convocation Center to my brain) is near-ish to a couple pizza places. Oh, actually... http://g.co/maps/9dnzq <-Map with with restaurants.

I've been to a few of the restaurants at Playhouse Square (Bricco &
Star, both good but pricey, Star more so than Bricco) and I've heard
good things about Rascal House. I imagine CSU should be done by June
9th, or at least not as busy, so any of the restaurants in the area
shouldn't be too crowded.

But when I am healthy, let's have Cleveland fun! Yay and stuff.
