Seems like the majority of NYC pinners are from Brooklyn, which I love. But ... Real Talk Time: I live in Queens and going to Brooklyn for a social event is the longest. haul. ever. Anyone willing to meet up someplace that is not Brooklyn? (I'm in Astoria, if that helps.)

I live in Manhattan and can get to Astoria easily!  Perhaps we should arrange a minni-pinni/non-Brooklyn edition?

I'm with you guys! I live in Astoria and would love a non-Brooklyn or non-lower-Manhattan meetup.

I'm in Jackson Heights and I'd love to meet up, either in Astoria or anywhere else really (I just moved here and know absolutely no one). Maybe we could do a fun summer mini pin up?

All right, y'all! That's what I like to hear. I'm free after July 23rd, if that helps. Any ideas for meetups? The only idea I have is this: I myself am an Olympics nerd and would really like to watch the opening games (which are on July 27), but don't have a television. We could hunker down at a bar and take in the ridiculous British-themed festivities. Or, if nobody else likes themed sports outfits, we could just grab a drink.

I am such a fan of this idea. I love the Olympics AND I don't have cable!

Well, the (old) Beer Garden in Astoria has about a bajillion TVs, and I can pretty much guarantee they'll be showing the Olympics.

Okay great, I didn't want to suggest the beer garden right away because I didn't want to be "that" Astorian, but damn I love that place. I don't know what time the ceremony starts, but I guess let's keep the evening of July 27 open?

YAY ASTORIA PINUP!!
And I refer to it as the "original" or "good" beer garden.

Hooray, Caitlyn!  I'll be out of town the 27th, but I like the beer garden and will happily travel to Astoria now and then (for future reference).

I know there's a book group that uses Facebook to coordinate, but I can't check FB at work (and don't care to be on it that much anyway), but if the existing group has nothing set for August, I would like to suggest the possibility of a book group meeting next month.  In a bar in Manhattan, maybe a meet and greet to talk about what people like to read/want to read/know they won't read if there isn't a book group discussion pending, in order to choose a book to discuss later.  I'm not terribly interested in reading the most-talked-about current fiction in a book group (it's already getting enough attention and everyone who reads is either already reading it or would eventually anyway). I like the idea of exploring some of Nicole's excellent suggestions, books that are awesome and don't enough love.

Yesss!! Astoria would be great. There are a lot of outdoor spaces there and the combination of the outdoors the olympics beer and pinners sounds wonderful.

Hi! Just wanted to mention that I too support any Queens get-togethers. I'm out of town on the 27th as well, but would love to attend any future Queens meetups. (Forest Hills based :) ) Astoria beer gardens are always great for big groups :)

I live on the Brooklyn / Queens borderlands (Bushwick? Ridgewood? Depends on what side of the street you're standing on!) but I need good excuses to go do new things (it's like that League of Extraordinary Ladies, you know - do something social that terrifies you once a week) and I should be around on the 27th so I can definitely come and meet you folks. I hear all about the beer gardens but I've never been.

All,

It appears that the opening ceremony will be on NBC from 730-midnight. I don't know how early we should be to secure a table at the beer garden, but I will probably be able to get there between 630 and 715. So I will try to grab a big table around that time, and anyone who wants to come can trickle in and out between 715 and midnight.

So you can recognize me: I am 5'2", dark blonde pixie cut. I'll have a giant pair of green sunglasses with me on the table. I'll tweet a picture of me wearing them when I get there (@thecaitd).

See you there!

It's not just the book group, it's everyone!  And if you've got a book club suggestion, please pitch it to the FB group!

This is on the 27th right? If so I'll definitely be there and I'll see you around 6:30/7ish. I'll be wearing a white dress and black shoes.

Awesome, can't wait! Yes, it's on the 27th. And if anyone on this thread could do me a favor: apparently posting this event on the Hairpin Facebook group page will get more participants. Unfortunately I'm not a Facebook user, so I can't post it myself. Could someone with a Facebook profile slap the details (time, place, etc) up on the group page for me? Many thanks to whoever does.

So I am here and have no idea if anyone else from the group is here already or not. I am wearing a bright yellow dress and purple tights sitting by one of the TVs.

I'm a regular Pinner on vacation in NY this week. Curious if there are any Pin-ups or anything else fun going on this week! Is there a separate group for NYC Pinners? I expected there to be more posts on here, so maybe that's why.
