Hi all,

I am thinking of renaming hackert0wn to something that doesn't have the word hack or hacker in it.  Thoughts?  Ideas for names?

The thing with Maker is that it is limiting to makers... There is also Maker Ville or Maker T0wn... but just seems like we should be more encompassing or generic.  I was thinking TechT0wn, but then still it limits it to only tech.  How about GreenT0wn?

Before we get hung up on everyone's incredible ideas they invented 30
seconds ago, why don't we focus on 'Is rebranding a good idea?" I
think it is a perfectly fine thing to do.

I think so too.  I think if we could reuse the logo + color scheme somehow that would be good.  In terms of legal entity it would be fine to keep Hackert0wn, Inc. as it is now and just DBA _____.

Here is the latest rendering by the way (Thanks Jethro).  I've been talking with the owner about putting some signs on the lot to garner some interest.

TL;DR I'm not against renaming it, if there's a solid reason for doing so.

First, I think it'd be a good idea to explain what the goal of changing the name would be.

Some things to think about:
 - What kind of people do you want to make up the core membership, which will define the culture of the space?
 - Changing names at this point is throwing away hard-earned brand name recognition.
 - People (as in, the general public) are generally intrigued by "hackers".  People like what they've seen in movies and TV shows about hackers (and it's not ALL inaccurate).

Keep in mind that I don't live in NYC, so perhaps I have a different perspective; and I am a supporter, not a founding member, so I inherently have less of a stake in hackert0wn.

There is zero brand recognition in hackertown at this point, relative speaking to the lifetime of the space.

If a re-naming is in order, I'm in favor of something that is somewhat ambiguous to someone the first time they hear about it, while ringing well in the brain, like:

3rd Ward
Broken Angel
Time's Up

etc. These are organizations and spaces with good names that aren't limited, either by geography, meta-meaning, or location that places like these are:

The Brooklyn Free Store
Factory Studios
68 Jay Street

Does that make sense?

These are just what I "like" - that doesn't mean a limited name sucks, or that a clever name doesn't suck as a brand, it's just my preference.

FWIW I like the word town.

cheers, NN

I'll setup a google moderator to collect names so we can vote.  I've been pondering these:

MotherEarth
Earth (something)
EarthHQ
19 Maspeth

The more I talk it over with people and based on the activity on this thread, I think it's a good idea to rename.

Thanks!
