Hi,

Dave Appleton will be doing another beginner Arduino class at Hackerspace this Friday, the 31st. It's intro level so if you've been for his classes before, you probably won't find this useful. Feel free to drop by though. If you have never attended, Dave's classes have had fantastic turnout, and many participants have gone on to the intermediate level classes and created their own projects.

On Saturday the 1st of September, Hackerspace will be having it's annual Hackathon, this year called "HackDo, the Get Shit Done Hackathon".

Please join us to help with HackDo - the Python Django based membership system, our Door access controller, or physical hacks to the space like rearranging furniture (to your liking) or a new coat of paint outside. Serious participants will be awarded up to a year of hackerspace membership.

Slightly further out on Sep 15, Atamert Ölçgen will be conducting a Blender 3D workshop. There are still 2 spaces left.

Meng's also offered to teach Sketchup, though I don't think he's set a date yet.

Regards,
Alvin.

Hi Alvin,

Could you please provide details of how the rewards system will be implemented? I looked up http://hackerspacesg.pbworks.com/w/page/55539710/Plenum-20120717/ and didn't find precise details and the date is really drawing near. Thanks in advance.

Best regards,

Luther

Why paint instead of stain? Paint we have to scrape off each time and
then paint, whereas with stain we just apply a new coat.

Hi Luther,

Thanks for reminding. I thought I sent it with the original announcement post, but apparently not. Check your inbox though, I might have sent it to a few people prior to the list announcement.

Anyway, here it is for everyone:

Each participant gets to award as many points as there are participants to other participants. Eg, 20 people, 20 points each to award. You can award them however you like. Each point is worth 1 week's membership, rounded to the nearest month (min 1 month, max 12). Free membership can only be claimed after arrears are settled, and new members are still subject to the on boarding policy, which is to get 2 sponsors (should be no problem if you participate) and 1 month's upfront payment. Awarded tier of membership is at the same tier you're at or are paying for. Awarded membership cannot be used to settle arrears. No receipts or invoices will be issued for free membership (duh) - your membership status will merely be updated with the new expiry date.

I'm open to other ideas that allow anyone who seriously contributes to enjoy the fruits of their labour.

There are no prizes as HackDo is be across several areas, and all the sponsorship will be going to food, drink and cleaning supplies.

Cheers,
Alvin.

Yes, feel free to show up and stain - the point is that whoever does the work gets to decide what to do.

Let me clarify:

So if 20 participants show up, each participant will get 20 points. If 1 person award all of his points to someone else (he deems worthy), that person would get 20 weeks (or 4 months) of free membership. Is this correct?

And just to be certain, I suppose you mean that one cannot award points to himself/herself?

more interestingly, if more than 50 people show up pretty much everyone
could get a free year because there is no benefit for any single person
to get more than 52 points.

Yup. And yes, they shouldn't award points to themselves.

I think you mean "if there are more than 50 contributors". Yes, it's possible and would be absolutely fantastic because it would mean roughly equal contribution and we'd then have lots more current members. Unfortunately it is rather unlikely because:
- We don't have space for 50
- I'm only passing out the point awarding form at the end
- I intend to to kick out anyone who is just there to game points.

Also in case it's not clear, spectators are welcome, though they may be chased out if they get in the way. Drop by for a chat and support your friends. Participants need not be present throughout the entire thing, though they'll have to be there at the end to do the points thing.

One more thing (you can tell I'm making this up on the way):
- I'm the points-counter, dictator, general evil-person and the only contributor who will not be eligible for points. On the plus side if the police show up you can tell them it was my fault.

And before I start contradicting myself with more rules to cover edge cases:
- This is all good faith to reward people who participate. If you contribute you won't be left out, and if you don't you can buy points at hmm… $32 per point.
