Hi all,

Prof Zhao from the NUS HCI Lab would like to introduce himself and his team to Hackerspace, with a view to furture collaboration, workshops and sharing of expertise. They're also interested in building a maker-oriented hackerspace at NUS, with cool tools like laser cutters, lathes and mills.

I've been to their lab and it's chock full of the kind of stuff we dream of being able to play with, given the time, space and budget. They've got frankenstein roombas, electronic kits, robotic vision sensors and all sorts of cool stuff hacked up.

Are we planning a show and tell anytime soon? We could work them in with a couple of presentations before, or organise one just for them.

Happy to organise, if interested people will express their interest and suggest their availability.

Their website is at hci.comp.nus.edu.sg

Cheers,
Alvin.

*likes*

I don't know if I can help in any way, but I've had a little experience with prototyping and 3D modeling, so if there's anything I can do, just let me know :)

Cheers
Chris

If this is the same guy that lectured on HCI while I was there (and I think he is!), I'd just like to say that i very much remember enjoying his lectures while i was there...

I don't have much to say about his lectures - but he demands a lot from his students, and consequently, the projects under him tend to be pretty good. I remember placing a laptop on a Roomba to use as a telepresence robot heh.

Yes, it's Prof Shengdong Zhao from the HCI Lab. The roombas are still
around.

I currently have my hands full so if someone could arrange a date and
time at Hackerspace and see if we can organise some show and tell from
our community as well, I'd be happy to coordinate with them and host.
Sometime early July would be good.

Regards,
Alvin.

I'd like to arrange the next Hackerspace show and tell, where I'll also
invite the HCI Lab folks to participate. Is anyone interested in talking
about their projects? You don't have to be a member to talk about your
cool software/hardware/geek project.

Tentative date is Saturday the 7th of July, late afternoon.

Ideally we'd get some food and drinks too, but I'd have to find a
sponsor unless we all want to chip in for pizzas.

Sounds very cool.

At the risk of playing Devil's advocate though, what's the catch with future collaborations?  IP issues are the first thing that comes to mind...

It's all open for discussion, and if you're concerned about IP then you
should definitely make sure it's discussed early. Nothing's been
discussed yet, so as of now there are no catches.

I'm not personally interested in research & commercialisation
collaboration though, so I'd highly encourage anyone who is to drop by
on the 7th of July and talk to Prof Zhao, maybe take the lead in
establishing some sort of working framework.

Having just built my own CNC and now desperately trying to learn CAM and Gcoding, I'm definitely interested to meet him!

Wow, can you take some pics and share with us?

The show and tell event is this Saturday at 4pm. Come join us, would be
great if you could also speak for a few minutes on your CNC.

Regards,
Alvin.

As someone who's been wanting to get a lathe (and maybe a mill) but can't find the space and wouldn't be able to lift it, that sounds fascinating!  Would like to know more.

So drop by Sat (tomorrow) 4pm onwards for our show and tell.

Presenting will be Mike (who has attended all our Arduino workshops and
built something), Arul (on creating and maintaining the Restler open
source framework) and Zane (on an interactive vending machine project -
Formamat), as well as the NUS HCI guys.

Regards,
Alvin.
