Hi,

I would like to conduct a Blender 3D Workshop at Hackerspace. I want people to get a feel of this awesome (and feature complete) open source project. More importantly I would like to provide leads to many relevant subjects, so that the learning path afterwards can be smoother. For interested parties; there will be a long learning path after the workshop. No one can teach 3D Animation in a couple of hours, typically professionals get a 2 or 3 year education.

The workshop will consist of 3 parts; 3D animation concepts, introduction to Blender and a small hand-on project. Each part is roughly 2 hour long so the whole thing would take approximately 7 hours to complete.

I don’t have certificates to give. They would be worthless anyway. Before the fate hurled me into an entirely different career I used to work as a 3D Studio Max instructor back in Turkey. Students were mostly Architects and Civil Engineers. Being professionals they tended to not care too much about the theory and just wanted me to show them which button to click. The biggest challenge was to provide as much essentials as possible without being too boring. After that, it’s a matter or practice.

Let’s keep the attendees limited to 8 people. I ask everyone who would like to join this workshop to donate Hackerspace S$80 (S$40 for HS members). The deal is I will provide a professional grade workshop, and for spiritual reasons I don’t do it for free. However all the proceeds will go to Hackerspace.

Let me know if any of you would like to attend please. Also is Hackerspace OK with this?

Thanks,

Kind Regards,

I'd be interested but not sure if I can schedule my time in SG to overlap with several sessions. Do you intend to run this over multiple days or make it a marathon workshop? I expect to be back near the end of the month FWIW.

I'm interested. And I can host if needed. When do you plan to do it
(weekend or weekdays)?

Thanks for the replies.

> Do you intend to run this over multiple days or make it a marathon workshop?

I think it's best to do it in one day. Ideally some Saturday, so you can go ahead and play with it on Sunday. Perhaps we can consider 8th of September.

> You also don't have to give everything to Hackerspace, most workshops give 20-50%.

Sure. But I don't want money and at the same time I don't want this to be free. So 100% works best for me.

@Atamert: Do create a new course on http://www.curica.com/

A few of us use that site to manage sign-ups for courses held at HackerspaceSG.

For booking the facility (HSG), do drop an email to Justin Lee (just...@hackerspace.sg). He's the gatekeeper for adding events on the HSG calendar. If you are not a member, you will need a HSG member to host your event (a number of guys here who would volunteer to do so).

Hope this helps.

Benjamin, Ivan, Konstantin, Ian, Hanyang: could you please sign up via curica.

TJ Monserrat, Chris: perhaps we can repeat it a couple of months later if there is a demand.

Heh, if you tell me what the issues are in an off-list email I'll forward it to the guy in charge. He seems to be away in the valley, but I'm sure his locally-based developer would love the feedback.

Same goes for those who signup, if you see issues I'm happy to forward them.

took me a couple of minutes to figure out that "Watch" == "Register
for the class"

Watch != Register, there's this thing where people can create "trial" classes in case they aren't sure of attendance, and "Watch" just means that you'll receive notifications on changes to the class.

Unfortunately when he converts it to an actual class, all the watchers will be merely notified that they need to re-register and will still have to go on and click "Attend". I don't know if this is a good or bad thing but feedback I'm hearing is that it's confusing (same thing happened with Arduino & Tangikit).

Atamert you may want to "convert" this to a proper class now to avoid confusion.

September 7th is my son's birthday so will either have to leave the last flight that evening from BKK or (more likely) take the first flight the next morning. Hope I can get to the Hackerspace by 11a.

Thanks for the great opportunity Atamert, I hope you can conduct another workshop on a later date.

Ivan, it seems 8th is not a good day for many. Is it OK with you if I moved it to 15th?

Benjamin, TJ, Gideon are you all OK with 15th?

I think I'm also supposed to send an email to eve...@hackerspace.sg to get it marked on the calendar.

Who's hosting? If it's Ivan he'll have to notify eve...@hackerspace.sg.

If you're a new member and are hosting, you'll need to verify the slot
is free on the hackerspace.sg/calendar, then book it at events. There
are also other responsibilities for keeping the place up and all that:

http://hackerspacesg.pbworks.com/w/page/44367892/Arranging-Events

It's very important that the host is clearly identified, at least in
the event booking. In case guests show up early or there is some
unforeseen circumstance, the people in the space will know who to call
so that they are not unnecessarily inconvenienced dealing with an event
they may know nothing about.

Has the date been settled? I need to start making travel arrangements. FWIW the 7th is my son's bday so I will have to fly early morning on the 8th to make the event at 11a. Should be able to but if you wanna reschedule I'm ok with it.

The date is 15th. No more changing it.

That's the previous version of the same document. And Curica is kind enough to provide us a new permalink when you turn it to a confirmed event. Please use the link in the homepage or the one below:

http://www.curica.com/class_events/blender-3d-workshop--2

Also I deleted the un-confirmed one. Optimized for maximum confusion.

Registered & looking forward to it! Is this stuff relevant to 3D modeling for things we wanna make in the real world (like with Makerbot) or strictly for virtual objects? Just curious. I'm coming either way.

Blender can definitely do 3D printed models, but you will have to make sure it's a solid piece (aka you have to specify thickness etc and ensure that there are no open edges.

If there's an interest I could always do a follow up course on Rhinoceros 3D and AutoCAD as well. AutoCAD would probably be one of the best tools for solid 3D printed stuff (this is industry level) and Rhinoceros allows huge flexibility in creating models that have lots of curves (typically used in car modeling etc).

Cheers

Anyone interested in Google Sketchup?

I could do a session about that. It's not as cool as the others, but possibly more accessible.
