Just wonder if there's be interest here to join the reseller program. We'll
need a minimum of US$250 per order. :D

Hi Michael,

How does the programme work? Are you thinking of just getting stuff
directly from Adafruit or being Robot-R-us competitor? :)

They have a discount plan for hackerspaces around the world. Up to 30%
discount. But the minimum order is $250. So we prob gather enough orders to
meet the quota (from our community) and then place an order with them. We
save on the shipping and enjoy some discounts.

They are one of the few reseller that sells the plain Raspberry Pi
board (vs. as a set with useless crap like most other reseller), you
could probably just fill up your order with those if you can't get
250$ worth of merchandise.

I've got to do a run for some Arduino and RasPi kit soon - should be around
$150, if someone wants to split?

Huh? Element14 gives you a plain RPi if that's what you ordered.  They are
a bit cheaper than Adafruit as well - SG$ 45 instead of SG$ 49 - but that
is before the reseller discount of course. E14 also got overnight delivery
instead of waiting a week and risking the package getting stuck in customs.

But....  Neither Adafruit nor E14 hav any RPi in stock :-(

In september we ordered and received 2 raspies within 1 week from e14.
No pre-orders or any special connections.

That's why I said 'one of the few' and 'fill up your order with pis if you can't reach 250$'.

Got my Pi today from Adafruit, shipped 22.09. Send as letter for 10 dollar. I like Adafruit so in doubt I would always order with them and not E14, but it was also sold out at E14 a week ago.

Mine came from rs-online, though I seem to be the only one in Singapore who got one from them. They appear to be perpetually out of stock. I can't remember the cost but it came without anything other than the board.

For Arduino a couple of us support sgbotic, which is no more expensive than adafruit or e14 and has the benefit both of being in Singapore and supporting hackerspace.sg and local educational instutitions with free kits.

Other parts I tend to order from rs-online, just because they'll next day courier even 15c worth of capacitors alone for free (and accepting credit card payment for that 15c.)

e14 is fine too if you're ordering enough for free shipping or otherwise live near TaiSeng and don't mind picking it up - I'm not sure they do same day trade counter pickups anymore (might be next day) but at least when they did it was painless and near the MRT, unlike RS's current trade counter.

Sometimes it just boils down to who has the item in stock and can get it to me before the upcoming weekend. With gst exemption, volatile fx rates and conversion surcharges on sub-$100 purchases, all the extra costs and savings tend to even out over time.

10 days is not too bad...  But paying $10 in shipping and sgd 5 extra for
the item would make me think twice about it. But on the other hand it's
always nice to support the little (wo)man instead of a major corporation.
But on the third hand Adafruit might not be considered a "small" store
anymore. But....

Many butts there, BUT  (pun intended) as Sir Mixalot said 20 years ago "I
like big butts and I cannot lie...."

Getting back to reality again...  When we at Hackerspace KL did a
"reseller" order from Adafruit a year ago or so it got stuck in customs and
we ended up paying a not too small sum to get it out from there.  And if
I'm not remembering incorrectly the discount varied from 0 to 30%
depending on the items so the RPi might not be discounted at all.

Still, if you guys do an Adafruit order I might join you if I find anything
interesting - and then pick it up when I'm in .sg the next time.

Hm, I never ordered anything from RS, they seem to always be 20-30% more
expensive than E14 (at least from a .my perspective) and seem to have most
of their stock in uk.  E14 had free next day courier for any order sum
previously, but 9 out of 10 of my orders are reaches the current
free-shipping amount so it really doesn't affect me too much.

I actually would prefer non-courier shipping so they just could plunk the
envelope down my mailbox or throw the package onto my yard as my local
mailman does when I'm not home. I hate being on standby for accepting a
package by courier. But E14 insists on a proper paperworks on the package.

Yes I believe is isn't much margin on the Pi, that's why i think most smaller shops package it in sets.

I got my Rpi from RS components.

As for adafruit, I think you should set up a gdocs spreadsheet and ask
everyone to add whatever they want, keep it open for 2-3 days. If the
difference to $250 is small top up with a Rpi or something that everyone
wants like an arduino which HSG can resell to anyone who comes by and wants
one.

We could make this a monthly or a once every 60 days thing for people to
constantly update their inventory. :)

Cheers
~Shan

Just a note of caution about GST payable if it exceeds S$400 (I think that
is the number).
