From the thread regarding the sometimes negative connotations that the terms hack, hacker, hacking, etc sometimes holds in a public eye...
For fun I'm offering to make up some vinyl cut stickers that say
HACKING IS NOT A CRIME
kind of like the old SKATEBOARDING IS NOT A CRIME style.

Any HSpaces that dig the idea... post up or email me your address and I'll send them to ya.
Gonna start with 20-40 per space up to say 400 -500 stickers over all.

If there is a big demand then maybe I can screen print like traditional bumper stickers so it's not so labor intensive.

Cheers!

I would love to get as many as you want for my Hackerspace Tour next
year. I will visit a lot of hackerspaces within Europe (on the road for
one year!) and already have a nice collection of around 500 different
stickers.

@Mars : Got a design yet ?
@Moritz : Really cool of you. Good luck on your tour !

It's nice to see such a cool idea from a very animated thread :)

Hey Mitch: Where do we get the Noisebridge stickers made and how much
are they?

A while back I reviewed prices, quality, and ease of ordering on a bunch of sites for our space's stickers, and stikkitnow.com was the best.  So good, in fact, that they're out of business.  Stickermule.com seems to be second.  I was looking for vinyl stickers that don't come on a roll, low prices for rectangular stickers, and an easy way to get them the graphics for the order.  Stickermule also sends you a nice pdf proof.

The full list:
Rubin: I remember Mitch talking about stickergiant.com circa the hackerspace sticker exchange, I'd guess that's where you get them.

Well I'm offering these for free for fun (maybe shipping would be nice or donations to my HSpace)...
But if anyone needs any other sticks made in similar method... I'll gladly match price (if i can regards to time involved) in trade for donations to save our HSpace or shared to create a new sister MSpace (new orleans needs both)... :)

anyhow... any comments on the design - belch out now... like i said it was quick.
Fonts and kerning chosen mostly for ease of production.  thin narrow letters or sharp serifs can be hard and all the little parts inside of letters take time to "weed" out by hand.  make change requests soon.

I guess shipping them over to Europe might be quite expensive, but if
you shared the finished design, we could print another batch over here
and send them out to other spaces (or bring them to 28C3).

So hey, I made a crapload of stickers... and changed up the design slightly so that it is very very easy to make (weeding wise) if you have a vinyl cutter.
It can also be used as is (no floating solids) to make a stencil so that you can go vandalizing if that's what gets you off.

I'll post a list of who I have so far tomorrow and then I'll mail them out monday so feel free to add on to the list.
I'll make more this weekend and make sure each group gets at least 30 - but hopefully a lot more than that.
If you want more than that to sell or something to raise money - lemme know.  I'll post pics w the design tomorrow.

If ya wanna donate anything it'll cover shipping and leftover will go to my hackerspace GumboLabs here in filthy sinful lazy New Orleans
(we are hurting - planning alot of promo in early 2012 or starting a new group.).
Out of US people - either send a few bucks to cover shipping or look for a link to the design tomorrow to make them yourselves.

If you can't afford anything - that's fine... someone else or myself will cover it.
This is only for real HSpaces, btw... please let me know which one you're from.

Just whatever... Should only be a few bucks for shipping...
Honestly- I don't mind putting time into making them- and mailing...
But calculating a bunch of shipping would be craziness...
If 2-3 bucks didn't cover shipping... Someone else that flipped a buck extra will even it out.

Make sure u post up an address so I don't have to go lookin up stuff.  :)

I wish I could ditch them too... But I sell on the evil cousin of paypal- eBay.. And it's all I have setup right now.  Just give me an address and I'll send them out to ya.  U can mail a check back after if ya want- but only one of those huge oversized ones like when people win the publishers clearing house prize.   Speaking of- fun prank if you have a vinyl cutter and a van is to make decals for the "publishers clearinghouse prize patrol" logo - driving anywhere is very exciting that way.  Especially if you fill it up w balloons so a few slip out everytime you enter/exit the vehicle.  Oh the fun days!

If you want to donate anything now or after you get them -

Left overs will go to either my current hackerspace or a new one (current one is... waning it seems.... but got a makerspace running out of my studio in the works - with a heavy emphasis on jamming hardware into anything made :)

remember - donations aren't required but does help with the shipping to those who can't afford it.
But please if you want some for your HSpace - send me the address and I'll get them to ya.
Out of US - something for shipping is nice - but I can't calculate them all or manage telling each HSpace how much shipping will be.

I hope someone makes some stencils since I designed it to be one piece!

it's just a plotter / cutter setup doing cut vinyl.
It's a GBC 40" from 1996... I have a 24" also and a full color 24" ENCAD printer for posters/stickers/printed vinyl.

I use the plotter for alot of cool uses too... like various kinds of mechanical and chemical etch masks.
Working on media showing how that should hit instructables soon.

I know alot of people have those machines since they are so cheap now (my big one was 7k 15 years ago EEK)
but there really are so many many things that can be done with it.

I've cut paper using a 1W laser diode in it instead of the blade ... super cool easy x/y with a little bit of a z is what it really is.
I really use it mostly for making masks and stuff to be honest... not too much on the sticker side anymore but it's def one of my favorite tools I have around.

For instance... did you know that you can cut a circuit layout into vinyl and use that as a FeCl resistant mask?

:)

I'm making an instructable on that... I'm gonna try to get it done for tomorrow now. Been sitting on it for a long time.

It's very awesome that you're making these stickers :-)

Pardon my ignorance on this issue but I have a few questions. Maybe
I'm the only one, but I never entirely understood these "skateboarding
is not a crime" stickers. Obviously, in many places, skateboarding is
actually a crime. Are they a reference to the fact that people prevent
skateboarding by adding little nubs and physical barriers that prevent
skating even though it is still legal? And isn't it more common that
skateboarding is actually made illegal (through park rules / city
laws) in combination with these barriers? Is the actual message
"skateboarding should not be illegal", and if so, why say it like
this?

Switching to the matter of hacking, isn't the more important message
that hacking is not unethical and should not be prevented by technical
nor legal measures? Yeah I don't have a catchy sticker text for that
message, but i'm not sure that "hacking is not a crime" is a great way
to state it.

Maybe I'm missing something and perhaps someone can enlighten me?

I think in the early days of skateboarding, property owners objected to skaters using their property as a skate park (for example, empty round-bottomed pools or concrete lots) and skaters were arrested for trespassing. Also, conflicts with pedestrians or cars made skaters be considered a public nuisance.

The counterargument is that if nobody was injured or property damaged, skaters should be allowed to practice their sport especially in semi-public areas.

Since then, skate parks and bike lanes have been created to facilitate the sport with less conflict, but the debate over use of public and abandoned/unused space is still relevant.

And like hackers... They were seen as a subculture and anarchists in some people's eyes even though I was just stoked to pop a nollie into a frontside grind... And then fall and be hurt badly.

Also all hackers are skateboarders... Didn't you see the movie 'Hackers'?

Haha... And it's fun and brings together a little community.  :)

Cheers!

By skateboard is the only way to exit and enter a car as far as I'm concerned.

I'll let y'all know when I get
More together.
