Hans Camerzind made cheap, easy and ubiquitous timing based hobby proj= ects possible by inventing the 555 Timer IC. =A0He died on August 8th, whic= h many people (Including myself) missed.

I've been dismissive of Arduino projects because I find many of th= em don't need an Arduino at all, and part of that is crotchety memories= of the 555 Timer IC making things blink and buzz YEARS ago, and cheaper to= boot.

The design contains 23 transistors, 15 resistors and a = pair of diodes. =A0It sells for roughly fuckall cents. =A0It is one of the = IEEE's "25 chips that shook the world" (http://spectrum.ieee.org/semiconductors/processors/25= -microchips-that-shook-the-world/0) and has been used in toys, props, a= nd spacecraft. =A0Forrest Mims wrote an entire book about it. =A0There was = a recent contest celebrating it's use (The results of which are here: <= a href=3D"http://www.555contest.com/2011/04/the-555-contest-winners-announc= ement/" target=3D"_blank">http://www.555contest.com/2011/04/the-555-contest= -winners-announcement/ and are a good explanation of stuff it can do).<= /div>

Sure, the Arduino can tweet you when a stock price drop= s below a certain level AND your house is unlocked... But a 555 can easily = and cheaply make an LED blink on and off, and to many people inc. me, that&= #39;s a much more magical thing to achieve.

Five repetitions of Five sets of Five seconds of silenc= e for Hans Camerzind.

RIP.

(Apologies to anyone for who this is old news. =A0Searched the group, did= n't find any posts)
