Subject: Wades Extruder Parts

Hi All,
     My prusa mendel extruder broke!
<https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-gytRbyVbFBY/UF5U4cgq-GI/AAAAAAAAAh...>

It used a small 8 tooth gear which was destined to break but I didn't
notice until too late.
Now I want to switch to a wades extruder.
Can anybody help me by printing a good quality set?
Willing to pay a reasonable price for the parts.
If you have a hobbled bolt too that would be good.

Thank You

Pam

Hi All,

I was doing some research and the springs for the wades extruder could be
hard to obtain.

Where do I get the 25-50N springs does it matter how long the springs are
greatly?

Thanks

Pam

I bought some very strong strings from bunnings and cut them to size with a dremel. (never use anything else for springs, with the possible exception of some knipex cutters which will do things like piano wire)

But if you've got a knipex you don't wanna risk damaging it by trying that,
anyway :)

(I've used them, they're really superb tools.)

Here is some spring specs from rs-australia
Spring,compression,music wire,6.0 diax34.5mmEnds Closed (Square)/Ground Free
Length 34.5mm Load at Minimum Working Length 43.74N Material Steel
Alloy Minimum
Working Length 24.6mm Outside Diameter 6mm Spring Rate 4.4N/mm Wire Diameter
1mm

These are $31.60 in a pack of 10.
And using m4 threaded rod 1m cut to the right lengths with m4 lock nuts and
m4 washers.
M4 threaded rod is about $10.

Would that work?

Cheers Pam

i used to just use 4 spring washers and some nyloc nuts,
the spring washers can ride the variance in the filament diameter since
we've only talking less than 1mm anyway

I did find though that only two washers were needed depending on the
filament

Hi Chris,

So you think that the spring washers can apply the required force.
That would save the hassle using compression springs.

Great idea...

Thanks

at one point i was only using 1 but i'd recommend using all 4 in 3mm
filament, if anything 4 might be overkill, in which case all that needs to
happen is you jut back one off,

stickly speaking if the filament is really really good and consistant, you
can get away with and in some cases have even more reliable extrusion with
no washers at all,
and just rely on the nyloc nuts, it been a while since i've used 3mm
filament,

i currently use a 1.75 direct drive extruder with a jhead which is geared
more for fine detailed printing as opposed to the brute force of the wades,

Hi Chris,

Its a good idea to use 4. I like the direct drive but that's really only
for 1.75mm filament. I might switch to that later once I get better at
Repraps.
Chris you have some spare wades extruder parts. I saw on ebay a set for
$15. Do you have a hobbled bolt or any of the other parts. I also noticed
that
ebay sells a complete wade extruder for $40.
I'll be able to buy after wednesday if your interested.

Cheers
