I know this has been a popular topic in IRC but I've never really seen it
posted on the list. It's been suggested a few times that HSBNE should get a
vending machine and stock it with vitamins and common components that we
all use in our projects (arduinos, lm8uu bearings etc).
Any profits made from it would go back to HSBNE inc.
G'day at a machine shop a worked at a while ago was looking into to purchasing a locked drawer type system for consumable tips and the like, it required a pin number to access, and only opened / unlock the drawer required. although from memory these types system where quite expensive to buy outright. maybe something similar could be hacked to also serve that purpose? rfid tag to purchase?
cheers Brendon

Definitely a good idea,
I think we should put this to a vote for a item to purchase though.
And on that note it would be a item to purchase after we move in.
At that stage we will have a decent RFID system to interface with as well :)

We currently have an opportunity to buy a machine for use of the space at
the princely sum of $650.
It will handle the following:
- 6 x 375ml isles (e.g. standard cans of coke, sprite, fanta e.t.c)
- 1 x 250ml isle (e.g. red bull or V)
- 1 x 600ml sports drink isle
Drinks historically have been a pretty good earner for the space, so this
would pay itself off very quickly.
The only problem is it's due to end soon, within our 5 days limit for
notice. To purchase this we'll need at least half the current membership to
confirm that they would like the group to purchase it. If you would like it
to be purchased, please reply to this thread with your affirmation and
we'll go ahead once we recieve approval from at least half of the group.

We have a drinks vending machine at Gold Coast TechSpace that we inherited
from a neighbour - it's been a nice little earner for our space - it's also
an interesting thing to show the internals to people, kids especially seem
fascinated in how they work.
Do you guys have a snack (ie. chips and chocolate) vending machine? I've
been looking all over for a reasonably priced one with little success. If
you come across a good place to buy them, I'm all ears.

We make a tidy profit on drinks, which atm we reinvest into more drinks. However we're pretty sure that not every drink is paid for. It would be nice if they were, because then it could fund more than itself. A machine like this, at my estimate, would pay for itself within a year quite easily. 6 months perhaps, you lot drink a lot of soft drink.

Technically you're only a member (member defined as someone with voting rights and access) if you're financially up to date, or within our grace period (3 months).

Cheap laser cutters, circa Lionel's plus replacing shitty factory
components, are far less than 10k.
The "vending machine will pay for itself" is a pretty shaky proposition,
because it's not the profit from selling the softdrink that will pay it
off, rather the increase in profit following from ensuring every can/bottle
of drink is paid for. This assumes that this isn't presently the case,
which I don't personally agree with but admittedly have no data to refute.

We could duplicate lionels work. There wouldnt be any point but we could. If we were to pursue a laser cutter we would be pursuing one with either higher wattage or larger work area. Both of which bump up the cost, and $650 is still a drop in the bucket. I did a lot of costing a while back for laser cutters for grants, i can show you pricing if you're particularly keen. Also, modding together equipment almost ensures that that equipment will never be entirely usable, see the current laser cutter. (By entirely usable, I mean any inducted person can walk up at any time and use it) (not saying its not possible, im just saying these things tend to not get finished) So no logical fallacy there, and the facts are just fine.
I dont agree that the profit from the softdrink wont be applicable to the cost of the machine, since that profit is not applied anywhere else apart from buying more drinks at the moment.
We currently pay between 30c to $1.20 per can, and sell for $1. Coke is the $1.20, and we're going to stop stocking it until the price drops again. so lets pick a number and say we make 50c on each sale. That means we should be able to buy half again the softdrink amount each time. We dont, ergo not all drinks are paid for. Also, this effect compounds, and at a certain point the profit, reinvested into drinks would produce more drinks than we sell, and be pointless. Ie the profit after a certain point goes entirely into other expenditure, which would at first be a drinks machine and then into the group. Last drinks run we spent $180, which lasted about a month, maybe month and a half. So at a guess, i'd say every month we get roughly $100 in profit from drinks, ie 6 months for the machine to recoup costs.
Interesting tidbit, i think we figured out once at the rate we profit from the drinks, continually reinvested, would buy enough drinks to fill the current warehouse entirely by the 40th purchasing round. Thats not continual, thats the 40th round would fill the warehouse by itself.

I wasnt trying to make a vote in regard to a laser cutter.... it was just a passing remark... but since you started it.... a new and functional 50w laser cutter, ready to use, can be had for $2700 including postage.
As for ongoings... its only a sunk cost if its setup that way. The original hsbne reprap was a $1 per print and it paid for itself. A laser cutter at 4 times the price could be $5 per sheet + materials or something like it. ... just saying.. its within budget now.

> I dont agree that the profit from the softdrink wont be applicable to the
cost of the machine, since that profit is not applied anywhere else apart
from buying more drinks at the moment.
That profit can go straight into HSBNE's pocket, for buying equipment or
paying for building improvements. Buying a machine with the money to do the
job an honesty box currently does seems pointless. The only way a machine
would be an improvement is if it A) Boosted drink sales or B) Prevented
theft (of which I doubt the meaningful existence).
