I've gotten in touch with Brisbane Blacksmithing Supplies, once they give me a call back I should have some information on the cost of rail road track and Second hand Anvils and anything else about it I can find out. Hopefully hear back in a couple of days.

I just got a call back from Mike of Brisbane Blacksmithing Supplies. Really nice bloke gave me a lot of information on Anvils Scrap, where he get scrap from etc.
He is selling a 30Kg block of steel that will work well as an anvil for $150, though he all so said that the other option is to get as much solid metal and weld it all together as you guys are doing. His recommendation is anything about 2-3inches thick should work.
Also during the conversation I asked a few questions about raw materials and scrap. I was told that Re-bar is a big hit, scraps from exhaust shops is another good spot and also car parts, especially leaf springs.
I told him that if you guys were interested in the Steel block that you'd call him on 0434993726.
He is based in Eagle Farm with a workshop in Sandgate, He will deliver anything but its cheap to just pick it up.
Hope this helps.

What exactly are you looking to be making with the forge? My understanding of that side if work is that an anvil is mostly needed for the flattening of billet into sheet for forming and other hot work, but the majority of the hot (and occasionally cold) forming work was done with stakes placed into the brackets on the anvil (or into a sturdy vice nowadays).
You might be able to save a bit of coin on the anvil if you are not looking to be making sheet metal and are instead focusing on the forming side of it.

Luke.

You would be talking about hardy tools there, yes a lot of bending is done using the hardy tools and its also commonly used to hold fullering and hot cutting tools, but the actual shaping of the metal is done on the anvil face, i.e with a pair of tongs you need to make two flat faces in a piece of round stock for the pivot point and for the jaws, before welding handles on/drawing the stock out.
You need a heavy piece of metal with a hard face to allow a larger transfer of energy into the piece that is being worked. As you say if all you are doing is working with the metal. Also if you're looking at forge welding or using scrap iron/steel from cars etc you'd need the anvil face to work with piece to the appropriate shape/help the weld take hold.
I personally don't have any major focus for learning to blacksmith, I was looking at making basic tools, fasteners and brackets, hinges etc, purely for interest (and its fascinated me from when I was a child).

The forge Works.. Tested it Tuesday and wowed all the people there.
But killed the vacuum cleaner motor I was using for air supply.
Mr Lemming said we have some fan that would work in the space.. So
anvil next problem..

At the moment I have started welding some metal I have together.
I have 10 pieces of 150mm x150mm x 20mm (well I did Sean has 3 for a
bit)
I can just lift 3 with one hand so I'm guessing 5-7kg each..
Anyway It looks good for me to buy an anvil soon and Hacker space
member will be able to use it and the forge.
I will be doing more work on the forge tomorrow and more welding on
the temporary anvil.

For those of you with an interest in Blacksmithing I have found a great article that gives half decent information on the creation of tools, with some decent drawings for the steps.

I can get hold of a chunk of rail iron, 1 or 2 foot, if needed. No,
it's not from a currently used section of track.
Might take me a week or so to get it from my mum's place. I think
she'd like to know it was being used for this.
Also, I picked up at a book fair a set of "Workshop Practice", volumes
I to VIII. "A prractical work for the draughtsman, the mechanic, the
pattern maker and the foundryman" Second edition. It seems to be about
1920's era. An archive version exists here:
http://www.archive.org/stream/workshoppractice004349mbp/workshoppract...
I'm not a smith nor engineer but this shit fascinates me, and the
books are really neat.
That will Work Antifoo, but it won't take long and you will want a
real anvil. The rail is good for small stuff or small projects, but
there is not enough mass in it over all. To make it work better, put a
solid base under it, like a decent bit of tree trunk or a solid stack
of rail sleepers. the more mass in your anvil and base the better.

Troy

I've been doing some internet searching and was looking into induction forges (a possibility when I come back to Willis). I found this site http://www.mindchallenger.com/inductionheater/ seems to cover the build in depth.
Hopefully some one else finds this interesting too.

Induction forge / Induction furnace !! - COOL!.
Have been looking into these in the background for a while :), so,
yeah, interested to chat when you're back.
I called the Doug Slack Foundry in Emerald today and got a price for a 95kg anvil, it is $600 the shipping is $95.25 I have ordered one and its expected to take 1 to 2 weeks to arrive at the Brisbane Depot.
I know that they are a cast and quenched anvil, though they are not flame hardened, I am not sure if thats a problem but we'll see how it goes.

Hey me agian, just thought id let u know that the auctions tomorrow seem to have a lot of RC cars this is there page, in the photos section u can see them all http://www.mcdonaldauctions.com.au/ thought id give u guys a heads up, would of mentioned it earlier if i knew David
This is not entirely on topic but it's pretty close - according to the staff notices at work someone is looking to get rid of a Kiln for $200, the $200 covers the electrical disconnection but we'd need to collect it ourselves.
