Subject: RIP Hans Camenzind --> Creator of the 555 Timer IC

Hans Camerzind made cheap, easy and ubiquitous timing based hobby projects
possible by inventing the 555 Timer IC.  He died on August 8th, which many
people (Including myself) missed.

I've been dismissive of Arduino projects because I find many of them don't
need an Arduino at all, and part of that is crotchety memories of the 555
Timer IC making things blink and buzz YEARS ago, and cheaper to boot.

The design contains 23 transistors, 15 resistors and a pair of diodes.  It
sells for roughly fuckall cents.  It is one of the IEEE's "25 chips that
shook the world" (
http://spectrum.ieee.org/semiconductors/processors/25-microchips-that...)
and has been used in toys, props, and spacecraft.  Forrest Mims wrote an
entire book about it.  There was a recent contest celebrating it's use (The
results of which are here:
http://www.555contest.com/2011/04/the-555-contest-winners-announcement/ and
are a good explanation of stuff it can do).

Sure, the Arduino can tweet you when a stock price drops below a certain
level AND your house is unlocked... But a 555 can easily and cheaply make
an LED blink on and off, and to many people inc. me, that's a much more
magical thing to achieve.

Five repetitions of Five sets of Five seconds of silence for Hans Camerzind.

RIP.

(Apologies to anyone for who this is old news.  Searched the group, didn't
find any posts)

here's an ebook with 50 %%% circuits in it:

I made a "Digital" fan switch for my grandmother awhile back,
The circuit consisted of 555, Jk-flip flop and a lot of diodes to make
up the rest of the logic.

I have been told on many occasions that it's better than the original
manufacture board cos it works and hasn't broken since I installed
it..

It's good to get back to basics when needed :)
