Subject: Possible music room

Hi everyone,

I'd like to make a suggestion for a band room at the new space.

[N.B. I'm not a financial member (yet!), having no active projects at the
moment other than knitting and drumming. Not your traditional 'hacks', but
all the same, they're stuff I do. Otherwise, I've just finished my business
degree and am looking for events/marketing work so that I can afford
membership.]

From my point of view, I can't drum in my flat and there's nowhere in
Brisbane to play without bothering neighbours or paying through the roof
for a few hours in a studio, where most of that time is wasted packing
in/out. The reasons why I think *this would be a good idea for HS* are:

   1. greater variety of hacks
   2. potential increased membership (well, I won't always be playing
alone), as well as publicity in different markets
   3. utilise the space available
   4. learn new talents - I'd consider tutoring drums for members if anyone
   was interested
   5. live music while you hack!

I hope this suggestion isn't out of order, what with me not being a paying
member and all, but it's a worthy idea that could benefit HS so I thought
I'd bring it up in a more official capacity. Thoughts?

Best regards!

To be honest, given Hacking is a mindset/skillset/subculture I'd say
there's no such thing as a 'traditional' hack. With this in mind I'd
totally love to see a music room at the new building, perhaps we can
come up with some crafty way to make the rooms soundproof?

And if yarnbombing isn't an example of 'hacker' culture spreading from
its roots, I don't know what is.

Cheers,

I think this is what hacker space is all about an I hope we can have that
big room down the east end as a band room. Or you come listen to me play
the angle grinder in the shed. We could even stick a piano in there and I
could have a bash at playing chopsticks for hrs. But last time I was
banging metal while making the forge everyone complained about the noise so
I guess we may need to insulate the walls.

We could (and should!) make "No Chopsticks or Smoke On The Water permitted
to be played on any melodic instrument at any time" a rule.

Opportunity for angle grinder & percussion jam? I think so!

I think there's the opportunity to do some percussive sampling too and hack

I don't see a problem as long as things can be sufficiently soundproofed.
If music in one room is interrupting quiet contemplation, thinking or
planning in the others, that's sub-optimal.

Definitely, of course. I'd hate to bother anyone else at the space and I'd
treat it just like I have in the past in my own home: No playing after dark
if there's others about, & stop immediately or switch to quieter equipment
if anyone requests it.

If you are talking about effective soundproofing for a bandroom that would
mean a SRC (Sound Reduction Coefficient) of about 40. The materials cost
for that would be about $100 per cubic metre. Just as a ballpark figure.
The lower the SRC the lower the cost.

I'm not sure we'd bother. we are out in the middle of nowhere, no houses of
businesses nearby to annoy, and if we put it in the end building it
shouldn't be all that audible in the office Building. I somehow doubt
people in the workshop are gonna care all that much.

I think we would just need to monitor the situation and be careful it
didn't become a place where lots of random bands would come to practise on
the cheap. They would only need one person to pay the monthly fee to get
24/7 access. It should really just be for people who are interested in
hacking and also music/sound.

Speaking as a musician (in my past) I can vouch for that!

There's an old joke in the music biz:

Q: What do you call a drummer without a girlfriend?

A: Homeless.

Seriously though, there is a risk your hospitality could be abused. There
is a shortage of rehearsal studios in any city. I imagine Brisbane is
similarly pressed.

Maybe a form of casual membership or payment can help? I'd clearly be pay
for membership, first up. I'm happy to pay for anyone else playing with me
per hour if that's an option. I don't think that only one person paying
would be fair for a group of non-members, no. Definitely keen to work out a
deal so that HS's goals are benefited, and that the org isn't taken
advantage of.

Is there something else I should be doing in the music room other than
playing to be considered hacking?
