Now is the time to get moving on incorporation and putting together a
proposal if we're keen to move Hackerspace Adelaide into its own
space.

Perhaps we should put together an online poll to gauge how much space
& facilities members would need and how much they'd be prepared to pay
for that space.

Thoughts?

Can you really trust a website that presents this sort of wobbling image?

And I lost the image. :(

I was the 99th visitor and had a chance of winning an iPhone.  :)
Things like that always trigger alarm bells in my brain.

Hi

Adam here from MakeHackVoid in Canberra. I thought I'd offer up my
time to advocate on behalf of you guys to the Renew folks who'll be in
Newcastle for This Is Not Art this weekend. Angus and I will be up
there doing an Arduino workshop and some hackerspace themed
presentations. We mention you guys in one of the sections of one of
our presentations, specifically noting the work you've done on the
lantern, we'll be sure to share the message of hackerspaces as wide as
we can.

For comparison, we have 156m2 workshop space in Canberra's inner
north. We've found this to be a good amount of space. We're not using
it all optimally so could probably drop down to about 100m2 at a
pinch. Any less than that and we'd need to really cull a bunch of
things. Of course any group will expand to use the space available so
if you can get more I can see it being useful.

We are very lucky with our rent due to getting it at below storage
rates for a community group through the ACT government. Before we know
what our overall costs were going to be we started charging $90 per
month for Full Memberships (24 hour access) and $60 for Associate
Memberships (access when ever a full member is present) and reduced
that after we had a better idea of what our on going costs were.

It was this one:

WRT the hackerspace, one of the things that will be important is storage space. Probably lockable if shared.

-relaxation area
-outdoor area??
-car parking
-3 phase power??

Can you get an idea of space from this list?
Is there more to add to the list?

Just leased a place in Melrose Park 350sqM 3phase power, two toilets,
lots of natural light, high roof, hardened cement floor disability
access, little showroom at the front roller door at the back.
$28,000pa rent incuding on-costs, then insurance, electricity, phone
line, security monitoring. We are renovating ourselves, painting, built
a stud wall office, redid the kitchen and carpeted the office and
showroom so far $11,000 in materials. Believe me I lease three other
spaces and have shopped around this one is a bargain. I suspect a
hackerspace would similar

What is the current situation in terms of getting ourselves incorporated?  Is there something I can do to help in that respect?

I reckon a poll is a great idea.  Lets do it.

Hi There,

I've been involved in incorporating non for profits before. I'm really happy to help out with any of the application / documentation stuff.

+1 for incorporation here.

We chatted about it in session a few times. A list of the tasks
required for incorporation can be found on the office of consumer and
business affairs website:
http://www.ocba.sa.gov.au/associations/how/index.html

There is a preliminary constitution based on the OCBA example available
here:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1gIz8L5aCCc6YJEkN2G5HCFE_G8zxLPkgc8ezLaaa-lg/edit?hl=en_US
I would be interested in hearing from people to see if they think this
is a reasonable ruleset for the incorporated association.

This is not a terribly difficult process, just need to formulate a
constitution (plagiarise another hackerspace) form basic committee of
really committed people to represent the group, these people need to be
willing to stick their necks out, do the work and sign everything.
Supporters/members need to donate some money to help pay for a few fees
and your on your way. Then the really hard work starts. I'd say the
people who have been regularly attending would be a good place to start
as far as the first committee and Pix would make a good chairperson.
