Anyone want to build a balloon payload? We've got the gas for a launch sitting at Hackerspace...
Come up with something interesting and I'm sure it could be flown.

Ideally it would be something that everyone could have a hand in.
Or at least something that everyone is excited about seeing completed.
We have a bit of cash we could throw at it.
A kit for something useful we could all use?
Or something awesome we could show off at events?

What sort of things go up?

Would this also include anything that assisted/guided the original payload back to earth?ie. the foam boxes you normally put the radio gear/camera in to keep them warm. If this had 2 vertical stabilisers sticking out either side, sort of like ears, but each controlled by its own servo. Would this be considered a glider and hence unacceptable?I realise aerodynamically a box is less than ideal, but something that's helping 'steer' the box back to a general location that's floating by the same parachute may assist with recovery. Would this also be frowned upon?--

We can't fly a UAV glider such as that above 300ft, else we break model aircraft legislation. Even if it wasn't UAV, and was controlled by a human, it's still above 300ft and illegal to launch. Also there's something about the aircraft having to be in visual range of the pilot, and while it might technically be in Line-of-sight for most of the flight, I don't think it'd be liked by CASA.
In short, no. Not here anyway. Maybe at Woomera.

With a 1kg weight budget I could put something super stable together that might be able to return to the launch pointcould you take a small glider along?at least part of the way? I'm still trying to find 3.6V servo's.

I always wanted to make one of those 'falling water' dot matrix displays like they have in Japan. Just a bunch of high speed solenoid valves and some plumbing. Looks awesome!
The other idea, maybe not physically possible but why let that get in the way, is like a banner display that uses say 7 nearly parallel jets of water that go in an arc, and pulse them on and off to form characters that fly through the air. I dont know if the drops would stay formed long enough to be readable though.
Might need to make that an outdoor project, though a mini tabletop one could fit inside an aquarium to keep the water off the floor and away from the electronics.

I like the idea of a robot front end loader and have tried floating the idea on the diydrones forums.
Some of these ideas could be collaboration between just a few people, which would also be OK.
Also remember that design/creative leadership is useful in a lot of projects. So if an idea sounds cool to you but you don't know how to do it yourself, being a source of enthusiasm is a valuable role.
Things that can be accomplished in our current space would be handy.

A large DIY touch screen. There are various different

How about a dot matrix display made from cheap plasma balls.
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/USB-Plasma-Ball-Sphere-Desktop-Light-Lamp-Light-Show-/400482915561?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item5d3ea454e9&_uhb=1
I bought one of these once, to see what was inside, as they ran off 5v thought the inverter might be used as the basis of a cheap 5V to 1200V dc supply for a photomultiplier and yes they are. Also the sphere was quite a nice blown glass vessel with low pressure neon inside.
Happy to build a matrix of say 5 x 5 or some other arrangement with a opto isolated driver so it could be switched by an Arduino. The idea its a display that is also interactive when touched, just that someone else would need to do the coding.
Or in other words I'd be happy to pay and make some kind of suggested construction, high voltage or high current or mechanical or pneumatic or electromechanical "thing-a-ma-jig" that has a low voltage, low current, ttl input control that could be easily controlled by an Arduino or something else. The only issue is someone else would need to program it.

After having not-much-to-show at the SciWorld show on the weekend, I'd like to open this out to not just group projects, but anything that would look good at such an event. Interactive* stuff works great. So if you have something you would like to make (that may or not be a viable group project) but would look good at a Hackerspace Adelaide stand, then post it here, and the committee can think about paying for the bits.
(* where interactive in this case just means "its behaviour/appearance/smell/whatever can be influenced by the viewer")
