Hi there,

Does anyone happen to have one of these lying around? The Innovyz "server room" has 3 phase, but we are powering everything from a lowly little single phase plug an inconveniently long distance from the actual hardware. It would be nice to make use of the 3-phase plugs that are sitting right next to the rack.

Thanks,

Hmm, that would work for 90% of the devices in the rack (the SHDSL modem is on a plug-pack).

Hello,

Make sure the 3 phase outlet has its Neutral pin connected. There are
some outlets around that are missing the connection and if you try and
use them with a splitter things will go pop.

Wouldn't that be easy to check by just plugging in only one device to one phase of the splitter? No neutral -> no power.

Othewise yeah, if there were two devices on two phases they would share the phase-phase voltage, not the 240V. Would be messy if they weren't perfectly balanced.

(I knew that 3 phase EE stuff from second year would be useful one day!)

Wikipedia implies that the the board needs neutral, its plug will have 5 pins, and if the socket doesn't have neutral you won't be able to connect the 5 pin plug into the 4 pin socket.

Sounds reasonable - a 5 pin socket with the neutral disconnected would have to be a liability.  Those wires can carry a lot of smoke that you don't want to let out.

If you come across a 5pin 3 phase connector without its Neutral connected get it rewired or replaced immediatly without the Neutral there are several bad things that can happen if the load gets unbalanced & finds someway  to use the earth as the neutral - current starts flowing in the earth in an old installation this can mean you can get bitten by the waterpipes -not good   in a newer installation the RCD will trip if its in good working order if in a big installation this would be quite disasterous (I'm assuming killing the power to a computer server room is a bad thing) 4pin 3 phase is used when connecting 3 phase motors which in theory are a nice balanced load hence doesn't need a neutral & this sort of connector should never be used for standard 3 phase connections and if some one has installed a 5pin for a motor that only needs a 4pin I don't think that is the electrician to call to rectify the problem. 3 phase splitter boards currently available will also have a RCD installed as they are treated as "portable" devices they have to have all the safety equipment installed (they arn't cheap to build $100+ for the 3phase connector $100ish for the RCD Circuit breaker & then all the single phase outlets & the Fireproof enclosure & mounting board) and they have to be Test & Tagged frequently.
