Subject: Where to get a RepRap?

Hi all.

I'm looking to buy a RepRap either pre-assembled or assembly required is
OK.  Can anyone point me to the best place.  I've seen some on eBay, but
really not sure what I should be going for.

I also want to spend as little as possbile.  I've never had one, never done
any 3D printing, so it's about time I do - but I want my first time to be
cheap ;-)

Thanks,
Ross.

There's a 'for sale' section on the RepRap forums which might be worth
checking out. I think Greg Frost on there (located in Adelaide) was at one
point selling them pre-assembled and they came with a quick demo if you
were located in Adelaide. I was also wanting a RepRap but caved and went
the easier path of a Solidoodle, but the 3-4 month wait is killing my inner
geek :(

It's a trade off of time versus cost. There are some kits you can score off
eBay that have everything (I think) except for the rods. More parts you
score yourself, the cheaper the build price will be.

I'm sure the guys on here will also have some pointers since they build
their own :)

firstly it's worth mentioning that if you mostly want to print stuff (and
not tinker or build) then there any already plenty of accessible printers
in adelaide. the fablab will be opening in october and the innovation lab
at the grote st library is already running.

but if you really want to build one, we bought these kits from
http://www.emakershop.com/Seller=869 but it looks like they are sold out
now.

i'm a little dubious of buying kits from unknown sources as i have heard
quality horror stories. even the electronics from our kits left a little to
be desired.

if you wanted to do it as cheaply as possible, i would use one of the
adelaide printers to print out the parts for a mendel. you can buy a hotend
kit from Vik http://diamondage.co.nz/?page_id=161 and some of the other
tricky parts (pulleys and timing belts) you can get from bilbycnc. Bilby
also sell ramps electronics to drive a reprap.

you could also head to aspitech and try and get your stepper motors
dirt-cheap, they have buckets of stepper motors pulled out of scanners and
printers.

"*In order to get you the latest bleeding edge technology at the best
price, we're currently accepting pre-orders. When listed as "In-Stock",
your printer will ship in approximately 8-10 weeks after you place your
order.  Your credit card is charged at the time you place your order to
reserve your spot in line. We work hard to ship your printer as soon as
possible while still maintaining our rigid quality control standards.*"

Maybe when they accept orders rather than "pre-orders" would be the time to
buy from them.
Oh and it would be nice if they indicated how much shipping to Oz is.

Too much vapour-ware out there.

Ken.

In a rare coincidence, I'm with Ken on this :P

The reprap project has been evolving the design of a low cost 3d printer
for 5 years. It looks looks like a deceptively simple problem to solve. I
try not to recommend any printers I haven't seen working in the flesh.
