Hi all,

Just a note that Science Alive is three weeks from today, if anyone had anything special they needed to get ready for our shared table with the HAMs.

Should we cancel the Saturday August 11 meeting (which clashes with Science Alive) and instead put "hackerspace at science alive" in the calendar?

Also, the Adelaide Makerfaire is definitely happening, but it's been pushed back to April next year. Which means we can be much more foolishly ambitious about what we might want to show off there ;)

Lastly, I'm thinking of attending AVCon to have a nosy, since I've never been to one. Anyone else planning on attending?

I'll be spending next weekend working on the floppy orchestra, although
since I'm not musically inclined, I may require some assistance.

Sounds like a good idea, since I suspect most of us will probably turn
up at Science Alive anyway.

Sounds like it could be a lot of fun.

I won't be attending, but a certain Raspberry Pi in a bucket will be.

Cheers

I'm hoping to be there with some Project Horus stuff. I'll also have a
Codan Manpack radio to show at the amateur radio table.

I'll see if I can tee up a small balloon to inflate and hover over the
stall.

the closing party after the first installation what so huge that you couldn't get within 100m of the BCC where it was being held,.
that's how much of a cultural icon it had become. the place to be that night was hanging out with the geeks that made it :)

Thanks Stephen for organising Hackerspace side to this.

- I am rapidly running out of filiament - printing small stuff to
allow some giveways (by donation?)
Is there more at hackerspace?

- Mark: Thanks. I have borrowed a Codan Manpack from Codan in the past
(from Will, member of EARC). Its good to have one on display.

- I am looking at having my peddle powered generator there. (Produces
13.7V from a car alternator.)

- Do I need to organise a whiteboard for 'whiteboard bot'?

Cheers,
Paul

Hackerspace still has filament. Jon has discovered that it is much cheaper at Bilby than from DiamondAge. I'm still selling the excess at hackerspace at DiamondAge prices, otherwise the hackerspace will eventually use it all.

Just to clarify, the PLA in the cage is free to use for hackerspace related uses.

That would be useful.  Otherwise Cheap as Chips and the Reject shop have decent (ie. enamelled; not crappy plastic covered board) ones at $15 (45x60mm), $20 (90x60) and $30 (120x90).  Maybe I'll need one anyway for testing, although a small crappy one will do.  We'd need to attach it to the wall somehow.  Of course this depends on me getting it built and working on time!  I plan on going to the hardware store today for ideas on how to mount it on top of the board.

The host side software should be mostly done.  It turns SVGs (no text though, convert it to paths or use the Hershey plugin [1]) into the motor commands.  There's a binary on Github [2].  I plan to run the strings around a pulley instead, so I'll need to separate the string feed rate from the reel diameter (the pulleys will be much smaller than the reel).  I've designed a reel and can hopefully print it on Wednesday, and hopefully some brackets to hold the photointerrupters.  I'm still not entirely sure how I'll design the part that holds the pen.

I hope the stalls are fairly big... it sounds like we'll have a lot of stuff to show off!

Should we move the Sat 11 session to the 4th, to get this and the floppy orchestra done?

Some of the Youtube videos had the drives mounted in a computer case, which made them sound more impressive.  If we mounted the drives to a wooden box, would that act as a resonator and make them sound less tinny?

Oh, damn.  I should have thought of you.  Aspitech have a floppy drive box (big and small) for recycling.

I had a go at 3d printing the AH logo from the wiki stl, but it didn't print the fine lines on the logo.   Thinking of using it as a badge for the booth, and/or business card.

Because of the fine detail (and skeinforge's bugginess) you need to print it with zero extra shells.

You can try this vertical one on a stand:

I've never printed it, so it probably needs tweaking.

What also looks good, if maybe a bit old fashioned, is a logo etched on copper-pated phenolic board (PCB) then varnished to keep the copper shiny.
