hey there,

does anyone have any old and disposable usb gsm/gprs/3g/whatever dongles?

i'm curious to take one apart and see how hard they are to re-purpose as modules for projects. i'm guessing they all expose a serial AT interface, if it isn't hidden under epoxy.

on that topic, check out this awesome customer photo for a gsm spy tracking gadget on dx:

If you look in the device manager under windows or the /dev directory under linux, you can see the usb seriwl port of your wireless modem.

AT command do work, at least they do with my huawei E169.

Just be careful you dont "brick" a modem you want.

Only reason I tried was in the documentation it mentions you can link 2 of them, peer to peer.

Of course they dont actually tell you how to do P2P, that would be way too easy!

But I did manage to dump the registers and dial, but that was as far as I got.

I'm hoping I can get to the serial lines before they become wrapped up in the USB-serial protocol, for sending AT commands from an Arduino (for example).

You might be better looking for an old phone with a serial port that has GPRS, but they might be rare these days.  I seem to remember reading a brochure for the chip in a dealextreme dongle which suggested it has a serial port, but no datasheet though
