Basically any ideas that people come up with which promote Free Open Source Software.  I think Installfests have passed their usefulness.

How about a mini unconference.  People can talk about projects, ideas, publishing of personal projects, some open hardware talks or demos and food :-)

The date will be the official SFD in September, Hackerspace would be the venue and if it is an official Hackerspace event then it will be covered under our insurance  :-)

fwiw i've got some funding between Aug - Dec. it roughly involves parking the bus in city centre & hosting pop up happenings of different types, catalysts for digital/physical gatherings. I'd love hackerspace to be one of those. it could possibly give an extra play space for ideas & members (new & old). was planning to use aug to plan for later months but it could well be around this (my other projects in next couple months include openstreetmap).

a 'Linux install fest' would work well for that context - e.g. bring your (older??) laptop to the bus & get help installing Linux on it. what happens beyond that depends on you/people you meet there/new membership potential/etc. could easily become a series of events to get people through a few stages of glorious infection. and yes I this excites me specifically because I'd love to find a way to resurrect my old Sony vaio pcg-u3 with the most suitable Linux build (so far I've not found anything that doesn't slug).

I can put a little bit of cash behind that (or something like it) too.

just throwing a hand in the air for a yes, either for this (I'm away for some of sept, tho) or something else to contribute my time/hype/cash to promo &/or play with something HA-related.

Some great ideas Fee, I wonder if we could get permission to park the bus at 80 King William st, have something happening in the bus and have someone at a 'reception' desk in the foyer sending people up to Level 9 where we have some other activities happening.

it's becoming an interesting smorgasbord of me needing to get licences per location per need. so while yes your suggestion makes absolute sense on the one hand it's also possibly a hell-hole depending on context of activity, what night, where when...

but I'm a dogged bugger, so if we devise the thing we want I'll work on the way it can happen.

(tho parking the bus outside on King William strikes me as a big ask - it's an actual, bus stop! - maybe round the corner?!)

unless ... we devise a hack city perambulation... start at one place to build one thing, move to the next place to build something else, etc etc ... e.g camp hack in the park leading to bike hack leading to dotdotdot then HA space? nomadic life is a key focus of the grant project.

getting people to think of being part of the broader extended community would be cool too, methinks. maybe some of the budget I have could be used to bring those existing members from regional/remote IN to city (I'd love to take us out of city but this grant is city border focused).

Yeah not right at the bus stop :-)  Going by previous Software Freedom Days I was thinking of something during the day but it doesn't have to be.

Would be fantastic to bring people from country to a city event.  I've lived in the country all my life up until the last four years so I remember what it's like not being able to participate in many events.

rbrt is all about the bus being an excuse to bring 'this thing' to 'this thing'. they can be anything (or anyone) but ideally there is some creative digital component in context/process or outcome (tho I'm open to convo).

I don't know the format of the SFD official days, I'm more brain dumping on what this or anything could be, sorry! totally happy to run to form if any of this fits the right dates/times/licences for my thing. also happy for any of these thoughts to become something else that has nothing to do w/ rbrt & help where I can whenever I'm in town.

SFD 2013 on Saturday, September 21st.  http://softwarefreedomday.org/    It once got quite popular in Adelaide about 7 to 8 years ago, shame its declined in recent years, I liked the idea.

But at usual these things are driven by volunteers and so its needs a group to officially champion it, that has at least a few hard working well connected enthusiastic people to kick it off, promote and organise a venue. Otherwise they don't happen regardless of how good the cause or interest.  Other groups involved in previous SFD where - Linux SA, IT Share, Air-Stream and few others I can't remember amateur radio, music, video, robotics and gaming

But there is no reason why it can't be small and just be the theme of a Saturday hack session, to show support.

The universities are good places to advertise, computer shops, schools, TAFE, community groups and community centres, libraries.  Having it as a Hacksession is a good idea.  If anyone can bring along something cool they have done to show or talk about.  Having some usb sticks or cds with several Linux distros handy to give away is a good idea too.

I don't think that Linux is a good introduction to free software, since people will fire it up, realize they can't use their favourite applications, then toss the disk away.  On the other hand, we can get them started with free software like Gimp, Inkscape and LibreOffice which can run on their computers already and can probably do everything they need.  I only stopped using Windows full time once the only software I was using was free software.

It probably doesn't even need to be software focussed - we can show cool stuff running with free software.  The Lantern and the Huxley runs entirely on free software   Most engineering students probably don't realize you can program (some) microcontrollers without the vendor's proprietary and expensive software.  And if all else fails you can always play OpenArena or Armagetron...

I'd really like to hear more people describe what a Hackerspace SFD would look like. Then I'll do all I can to make it happen.

Knowing that I'm helping further the vision of the community is a great motivator for me. When there is little expressed enthusiasm, that is similarly demotivating.

So much we do today is thanks to open source software, not only the internet but also servers, automation, modeling, 3d printer software and firmware, and everything etc. etc.

Essentially SFD is just party! with a foss theme celebrating software freedom.

So what does it look like?

Imagine a group of people with laptops sitting around in penguin t-shirts eating cake.  No no no

Music!, Light shows, Automated thingys , cupcakes and micro brewed beer with a free software theme, then invite every geek in town to come free..

Offer free gifts - FOSS on a disk or download their own from the keg server and then dance, talk and play with other people with a common interests.

Organising something like what Robert suggested sounds a little daunting. From reading the SFD site, they are pretty vague on the specifics of the day too. We got one enquiry by email and I even asked them what they would like to see. It might be a little phoned-in but I guess a normal hack session, maybe with hopefully a few more people turning up *squints* with a free-software theme. Unless someone feels like organising the shindig Rob describes.

I often have the problem of not paying enough lip-service to free software, because it's my default choice and I use it for most everything. I don't really think about it very much.

But as you have the AGM next week its mostly likely best you have just to have a hackespace SFD theme and put our an invite to the community generally, I'm sure their are people around Adelaide looking to do something and just need a focal point.
