can someone dumb down port forwarding for me..

In the good old days (with Billion 7404VDOX's etc, infact pretty much every modem I bought pre 2012), I could simply use the port forwarding function to Map (?)  an external port to an internal IP address on a different port...

For example:

If someone hits on my public static IP with port 80 go to device 'A' on port 80,
if they hit on it with port 81 sent it to device 'B' on 80
if they hit on it with 8080 send it to the modem on port 80 etc.

Now days all the modems seem to have port forwarding which will not allow you to switch ports, only send it to a chosen internal device but stay on the same port

They also have port triggering which seems as equally useless... and I can not yet work out what the point of it is,  is there some way of mapping from one port to anther with modern ADSL modems?

I haven't used a post-2012 modem myself.  Is the functionality hidden under NAT, virtual server, or some other option?  What modem are you trying to setup? Maybe you need to use the CLI if it has one to get to all the options - I know that my old Billion 7402VGO was very configurable but not every function was available from the web interface.

It's a Netgear DGND3300v2.

There is a "DMZ Server" but it doesn't let you translate ports
There is also a "Port Forwarding" section, but again no port translation.
Can't see any kind of Virtual Server or NAT settings....

Yeah I googled the manual and I see what you're saying - no way to specify the destination port.

UPnP might be able to do it though - there are utilities out there that can send the right UPnP requests to the router to setup port forwarding - but I don't know if you can make that permanent - might need to be refreshed periodically.

You might be able to configure it via SNMP too, if you can get the MIBS for it, and an SNMP agent.

Good luck!

If you are using a linux box you can do port translation using
iptable's NAT:

The only Netgear hardware I have is already running DD-WRT... I couldn't get their software to do what I wanted out of the box (run in bridged mode).
