Subject: My Latest Project - Puma Re-Wire

Probably not technically a hack (yet), but this is what has been keeping me
busy the last few weeks... I have been re-wiring my clubman and fitting a
new digital dash - with logging, G-Force measurement and GPS tracking (it
does track/course mapping, lap/sector timing and all the good stuff). The
indicator stalk is from a '99 laser - previously it just had a rocker
switch with no auto cancel.

The very roughly cut bit of craft wood mounting the switches it just
temporary (to test the ergonomics) and will be replaced later with
something a bit nicer - probably fake carbon to start with followed by real
carbon.

The only fault I can find with the unit so far is alarm points for each
input are static, (you can set a low and high alarm point for Volts, Oil
Pressure, Water Temp etc - but you can not program it so that for example,
the minimum acceptable oil pressure varies with RPM and Temp), their new
logger now has this feature, but it is a very expensive upgrade so I am
planning on doing it myself externally with an Arduino. This will monitor
all the vital signs and hopefully attempt to blind me with a big F-off
light if anything is going wrong, as generally I'm too busy holding on to
look at the gauges.

Awesome dude.
If ever you need someone to help *test* the logger, let me know. :P

ballast in the passenger seat is always welcome - it helps to get the power
down... I would use the wife but she screams too much.

Well its finally back on the road.. Jon's Printed indicator auto cancel
tooth is working perfectly - though I did crack it pressing it on the
steering column, a bit of silicon soon fixed that though. Now I just have
to remember its there, I keep trying to turn off the switch (which doesn't
exist any more) after each corner.

Still got a few day of fine tuning the dash/logger setup to go, but its
basically all working.

What I could use though, if anyone has one, is a portable oscilloscope. I
am finding the GPS speedo can be a bit unstable (depending on how good its
lock is at the time I guess), so I want to use the original speed sensor.
But I believe it is an inductive type and not directly compatible with the
dash - which is expecting a nice square wave.

I doubt I'm going to be able to remove the sensor from the G-Box without
removing it from the car first... so probably much easier to test the
signal while on the road.

There is a DSO nano and a DSO quad at the hackerspace you are welcome to
borrow. Takes some practice to get anything useful out of the ultra-minimal
interface though.

That should do the job nicely - as long as I can lock it in to DC coupling
and a suitable time base - I am hoping to see a sine wave with only a coupe
volts p-p and maybe up to 1kHz.

I might even bring it in Wednedsay night if anyone wants to jump in and
drive the DSO from the passenger seat.

have you got it set up on something portable? It will only take a lap of
the block to capture the signal and work out what I am dealing with.

I don't at the moment. But it would be pretty easy to install the software on a laptop. I can install it on my laptop and bring it around when I come to pick up the gopher bits ;-)

yeah no worries, come grab them when ever you want - though Monday &
Tuesday nights I'm baby sitting so we wont be able to test the speedo.

I have done some more research, and it looks like the signal should be as I
expect, so I might be able to just use my DMM on the frequency setting to
see what ball park I'm in for the frequency.

bought the car in to work today - I don't really want to leave it parked
un-addended in the city for 3 hours, but if anyone has 10 minutes to spare
and knows how to drive the DSO I can swing by format and we can have a go
at looking at the signal.
