That may come in handy. I am toying with the idea of using normal roller bearings running in U channel rather than linear bearings for the Y axis.
4x8x3 bearings would probably run nicely in that - I would have one in each corner of the bed, plus one at the middle of each side that is offset slightly higher and spring loaded (using the stiffness of FR4) to take up the slop - 8mm bearings running in a 8.8mm slot.
I would also need 4 bearings laying flat to handle the sideways movement.

An upside of choosing the RepRapPro kits is that Hackerspace members
have already constructed three of them. The Huxleys on display at
science alive were purchased as part of RRPs initial production run.
I hope that they have sourced their power supplies from a more reliable
vendor though...

The retail price is US$779 posted for the Mendel and US$679 for the smaller Huxley. I like the larger Mendel version and would be willing to get wholesale pricing and organise the order if there are enough interested in Adelaide or Oz in general.
Don't know yet Ben. Still waiting for a reply from UK. Trying to get 5 Huxley and 5 Medel (I am after the larger mendel which can have multiple extruders for colour change) plus a few spare parts for backup. I will post when I get more info. Brenton
Hi J, Yes, I was told that at the show, that's why I wet Webbing for info on the RepRapPro kits. What was the PS problem - I'll check if fixed! Anyone built the the RepRapPro Mendel in Adel? That is what I am interested in. Brenton
I am in the process of build a Mendel using a mix of parts from the
Prusa Mk2 and RRP designs. The ability to support multiple extruders is
quite interesting.
Currently the frame is assembled, but I'm still having troubles with the
x-carriage print warping.

Jon, any chance of getting the hackerspaces firmware and skeinforge
settings uploaded to the wiki or a github?
been trying to get back into hacking/3d printing but it's doing my head in,
(still facing the same old problems assuming its a combination of a bug fix
in april, my skeinforge settings being out of date, and possible thermistor
settings)
also does anyone happen to know what the default settings for the xmas
huxley kits were supposed to be?

Pix & Ryan, I just double checked and the Start_PLA file in
skeinforge/skeinforge_applications/alterations/ has the line:
M92 X 80
This adjusts the steps per milimeter of the x-axis for the hackerspace
huxleys different gear size. I would suggest ensuring this line is
removed before using the profile with Paul or Ryans huxleys.

i'm coming in really late to this thread to say ideally i'd like to take
the thingomatic apart and rebuild it so that i know how it works and how to
fix it when it (inevitably) breaks every three days while i'm a nomadic
fablab.
but that needs to be numpty-level (which is pre-beginner).

life is stupid right now, i'm barely ever in Adelaide :(
i agree that it shouldn't be a normal session.
it might have to be after the regional arts australia conference (oct
18-21) for me - before the masterclass? so sometime w/b 22nd (tho not 22nd
because i will need to sleep the sleep of the dead that day).
Tamsyn I'd be more than happy for others to be involved in this!
Jonathan had also offered to help out with this (training the numpty) too.
I had also suggested videoing it... maybe...
Big thanks x

I want to get in on the session where you introduce a kits of parts all
bought in one hit from one place, guaranteed to work if assembled properly,
and not costing an arm and a leg.
Though I'd love a 3D printer, my head is still hurting from trying to get
XBee thingies to cooperate. So I don't want the added compexities of a
half-baked 3D printer.
I still have a lot of XBee reading/learning to do.
Things I've learnt so far:
- XBee is not for the faint hearted if you want more than two to talk to
each other.
- PHP doesn't know how to read a serial port reliably. Perl on the
other hand, does, with very little code.
- Manufacturer's documentation doesn't tell the whole story.
- Though it isn't spec'd to, the LM35 will send a decent temperate
reading at a supply voltage of 3v.
- It *is* possible to brick an XBee module. (But I believe it can be
unbricked -haven't tried it yet).
Sorry, hijacking a thread here. Got carried away.
My first sentence still holds.
Ken.

I have a brand new copy of "Building Wireless Sensor Networks" if anyone
wants to buy it off me.
its focus is Series 2 XBee's, not series 1, of which I have 6, wish I had
bought the book before the xbee's!!
I'm broke and could really use the cash.
Also 2 Sparkfun XBee shields still in zap bags, as well as a couple of
regulated XBee Explorers.

Ken.

That may take a while, I have finally finished one of the two project that have been taking up all my time, so doing a bit of hacking again - I made my first bit for my printer on Friday night - cut 2 bits of threaded rod to length for the Z axis, and turned the ends down to suit bearings and the flexi-coupler that links them to the steppers. It's not much but at least its a start, next step the base of the frame I guess.
