There seems to be quite a throng of printers becoming available. It
will be interesting to see in 6 months what kind of community or
manufacturer support is around for them.

I like the sound of this one.. makerbot specs, improved reliability,
print via replicatorg.

Damien: do you have links to others you like the look of?

I'm thinking of purchasing this one or a similar one so that we've got
two at Hackerspace sessions (more chance of at least one working at
any given time).

And of course not to be sniffed at... lowest cost I've seen ($300 + $50 shipping -presumably $US).

Maybe I exaggerated a bit, but there was also this one::

I wouldn't say I like the look of it, but I saw it at about the same time as the makibox.

Some of them get pledges even though there's no working prototype, which seems a bit strange to me.

Damien: that one looks quite good too. Seems as though it runs from an
Arduino, uses prontiface. Wonder if it's worth the extra $$ compared
to the Makibox. I'll have to talk about it with you, Jon & Pix at
hackerspace on wednesday and make a decision.

Dunno that you need to make any decisions until those as-yet-vapourware printers actually deliver.

Alas, unproven 3D printer is unproven.

It's a bet I'd happily make (very low risk at $300), but I'm not going to recommend it to someone who wants something that "just works", because there is no way to verify a products "just works"-status until someone that isn't the developer has got it to "just work".

As much as i understand your opinion on not delivered but announced printers, i have to defend Jon and his team here.

They have a bit different approach than the usual: Prototype -> Kickstarter -> R&D

So i hope the first actual version that will be shipped will be already rocksolid.
