Fab Lab Adelaide Launch

“A Fab Lab (fabrication laboratory) is a fully kitted fabrication workshop which gives everyone in the community, from small children through to entrepreneurs and businesses, the capability to turn their ideas and concepts into reality.”
(Neil Gershenfeld, MIT)

ANAT (Australian Network for Art and Technology) and DFEEST are proud to announce the launch of Fab Lab Adelaide.  The Lab will be officially opened by the Honorable Tom Kenyon MP, Minister for Science and Information Economy, at Adelaide College of the Arts on Friday 2nd November 2012.

We invite you to join us at this event that will include equipment demonstrations, a display of items made in the Lab, and presentations including a keynote speech from MIT Professor and Discovery Channel presenter Dr Zoz Brooks.

Fab Lab Adelaide is a community inventors’ workshop offering digital fabrication on a personal scale, in which new products and creative works can be made.   It will be equipped with an array of flexible computer-controlled tools including 3D printers, a laser cutter and a milling machine.  The Lab will offer classes, themed workshops, drop-in sessions, one-to-one tuition, a regional outreach program and family-friendly ‘maker sessions’.

The Fab Lab concept was originated by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and there are now over 100 around the world. Fab Lab Adelaide is the first Australian-based participant in the international MIT Fab Lab network.

Fab Lab Adelaide is funded by the South Australian Government (DFEEST), managed by ANAT (Australian Network for Art and Technology), and hosted by Adelaide College of the Arts.  See fablabadelaide.org.au for more information.

“3D printing …may have as profound an impact on the world as the coming of the factory did….Just as nobody could have predicted the impact of the steam engine in 1750—or the printing press in 1450, or the transistor in 1950—it is impossible to foresee the long-term impact of 3D printing. But the technology is coming, and it is likely to disrupt every field it touches.”  The Economist
