A tablet as a control interface

A while ago Peter was talking to me about using a tablet PC as an interface to control CNC machines and the like. This guy has done that:

No sign of how the tablet and arduino are connected. If the tablet has a USB host mode, you could use the serial-over-USB function. Not the cheapest option though as tablets seem to start at about $70.
Another option would be the LCD touch screens that Itead sells:
