The Hackergarten in Lugano is one week away (10 February), and I
wanted to explain it a little bit better so that you know what to
expect.
A hackergarten meeting is a time to come together and write code.
Typically we try and create a bug fix or a new feature for an open
source project. It's fun to meet new people, learn some new
technology, and contribute something back to the open source world.
Next Friday we want to come together and work on GWT and mobile web
applications. We couldn't find a good open source project to
contribute to, so we instead created our own! What we have today is a
small native Android application that is backed by Google App Engine
services (GAE). On Friday we plan to write a mobile web front-end for
it. The technologies we'll use are GWT, GAE, and PhoneGap.
You don't have to be an expert to show up. In fact, I doubt anyone
coming is truly an expert! I have some good GWT experience, and two
other Canooies are coming down that have PhoneGap and GWT experience.
We'll start the night be breaking out the tasks, estimating what needs
to be done, and then trying to implement some features.
And of course there will be food and drinks.
If you choose to show up then it helps if you bring a laptop. If you
can, have an IDE, GWT, and Git installed.
What we will not do is give a presentation or tell you what to do. No
one will be given an assignment or a role. If you feel like
programming Java then join a small group doing that. If you feel like
working on CSS and design, then do that. If you feel like becoming a
leader, taking the whiteboard and markers, and organizing the group so
that we work together better... then I encourage you to do so!
Friday will be a time to come together, meet some new people, and try
and create something for the joy of it. I hope it sounds good to you
