Does such a place exist? I'm up on 75th.

I'll also take any recommendations for fun food/market places? I really liked the Bedford cheese shop & the cheese monger in Essex st. Market. Looking for stuff I can bring home in my suitcase.

p.s. the fat radish is my favorite new brunch place (just reread the latest ny thread).

Ack. That's not a great part of NY for spirits, but when Suz and I were in town about a year and a half ago, we had evening plans (that were cancelled) that would have put us around that area, and the spot I was going to stop for a later evening "snack" and drinks was Bar Boulud. Owned by the guy who owns Daniel and tons of other expensive, high end spots around the world.

Anyhow, I just looked it back up, and it's as much a restaurant with a giant wine list as it is a "bar" but the cocktails are 14 bucks, which isn't bad for New York. I just remember thinking it the best thing we found for good wine and cocktails in that area. Like I said, though, never ended up making it there. It's near 65th and Broadway.

No food market recommendations... I don't tend to bring much food home. But if you're interested in scoring any interesting wine you can't get in Michigan, Chambers Street Wines (not too far north of the WTC site) or Astor Place would be good stops.

For markets, have you already checked out Kalustyan's and Eataly? Dean & Deluca is nice too but I think you can get most of that stuff here.

The finocchiona at Marlow and Daughters was super fantastic. I wish I had bought as many as they had to bring home with me. Also, check out Green Grape Provisions, Brooklyn Kitchen and Choice Green for markets.

Recipe is a very good restaurant on Amsterdam near 82. They used to serve a very reasonably priced lunch, but I think they stopped. Looks like they are doing weekend brunch now though.

So, this is a bit South of midtown, which ends at 14th, but it makes for a really good night if you are into Japanese cuisine/culture.

Dumpling Man is a fun little dumpling shop with old people in the back making dumplings by hand. This place is inexpensive with really good dumplings, rotating veggie and meat options and a daily mystery dumpling. (Hmmm,

Decibel is a really cool saki bar with an amazing atmosphere. Make sure you have it googled well if you go because it is really hard to spot. It is in a basement and if there is a sign it is nearly invisible. They have a good selection of saki and a pretty authentic menu of Japanese appetizers which are hit and miss but still make for good comfort/bar food.

Then, when toasty, there is a very good, very classy hidden bar named Angel's Share. This place is usually filled with the snobbiest of NY snobs in suits and gowns, but the cocktails are delicious and only $10-$20. To find this place you need to continue east on 9th, then left on Stuyvesant. You are looking for a scrubby second floor Asian diner named Village Yokocho. Go up the stairs and if the place looks like a 3rd world cafeteria then you are in the right place. To your left in the corner nearest the stairs you just came up is an unmarked door. Go open it, and you are there.

I have spent a lot of time in and around Morningside Heights, it is pretty barren of places that I found to be worth the expense. I would usually head north into Harlem for really good and Detroit priced Mexican food, or hop on the train south. I have a surprisingly short list of places that I really like and felt were worth the money if you would like it. :) I have been to too many NYC restaurants that were designed and furnished to perfection but that had mediocre food for thrice a reasonable amount.

I should also mention Pisticci. They have decent food and a small bar with a nice atmosphere.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions! I forgot about eataly, thanks Noelle. Wish I had the energy to trek over to Marlowe tonight. Think I'll end up at the cookshop straight south of here for dinner.

Cheers,
Christina
