Austin cocktail bars. Do they exist? People want to know.
Yes. Austin is a pretty amazing food/drink city.
Haddington’s (north of the river, west of downtown) is a full blown restaurant, but they have a spacious bar with lots of good cocktails and a nice whiskey selection. Lots of western US micro-distilled spirits.
East Side showroom (east of the major freeway that runs north/south) has kind of a quirky vibe and does some nice drinks, lots of classics and a few new things.
Bar Congress (right smack in the middle of downtown, maybe 3 blocks or so north of the river) is attached to the David Bull restaurant (Congress), and the bartender was written up in Imbibe a few months ago. Super nice dude, and he comes up with some crazy stuff.
There’s also a place called Peche that I didn’t make it to that supposedly does a lot of nice classic drinks. Geographically, it’s between Haddington’s and Bar Congress, more or less.
I walked to ALL of the above, to give you context, so they’re not all that far apart.
And LOTS of restaurants in Austin do good cocktails. Congress, of course, pulls its cocktails from the adjoining bar. There’s a place called Fino that’s kind of northwest of downtown (accessible by bus and a modest walk) with a really nice cocktail and modestly priced wine program. And so on.
I wrote a little bit (quite poorly, I might add) about all of these places in the series of posts I did while I was at SXSW last year. Here are the 4 blog posts (in inverse order) that are pertinent:
