Small plane with 4 on board missing in Alaska

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — A small plane carrying four people including three park rangers is missing in southwest Alaska.

A Coast Guard HC-130 crew is among searchers looking for the Dehavilland Beaver between Swikshak Lagoon and King Salmon, about 285 miles southwest of Anchorage.

The plane was carrying Katmai National Park rangers and was reported missing after it did not arrive in King Salmon as expected.

Park superintendent Ralph Moore says the plane left Swikshak Bay at 1:45 p.m. Saturday for a flight that takes about an hour.

Moore says the rangers, whose names have not been released, were at the site to prepare for a planned reconstruction of an old ranger station.

He holds out hope that the floatplane landed in a cove to wait out the area's abruptly changing weather.
