Honestly... The consequence should not matter anymore as much the
experience that you had for being a part of this program.

The end of 3 month old relationship with GSoC. I got up tonight and I was
like, I got nothing to do today. Though I was waiting for this day (last
month was quite hectic), but it doesn't feel good now. And for the money, I
don't know what I am gonna do with it. There are so many plans on paper,
but at last, I am pretty sure its gonna end up billing my booze for the
next one year till GSoC happens again \m/. THEY SHOULD TOTALLY LAUNCH
"GOOGLE WINTER OF CODE".
One of the best type of life. Hope its the same and better with everyone
else.

Why do you need 'winter of code'? Now that you know how to contribute,
why don't you continue it? You won't do it unless someone pay for it
or something?

Yes, I agree... it would be very nice if most of everyone continued to
contribute and give back to their projects (for the record, mentors
aren't paid anything, at least in the project I work on, so in some
sense, they volunteered by investing their time in you).
Certainly, the money is important, because it motivates, and helps one
dedicate their full time and attention to the project. But there's
still reason to continue contributing. Apart from the philosophical
aspect of giving back to the society, there are many pragmatic reasons
too:
1. Your learning doesn't end with a GSoC. 3 months is enough just for
bootstrapping you into the process and principles of software
development. There's a lot more to learn. And there is no better
place than the open source world, where you can actually tinker
around with real code from real software, and that too, with
several people supervising you.
2. Open source offers the rare advantage of working with an
international team. There's so much to learn from other cultures. I
personally feel that my few years in an open source project have
enriched me culturally.
3. Good proving grounds for employers -- your open source contribution
certainly counts. Even if you decide not to put it on your Resume,
you'll still be a cut apart from the rest, because you've dealt
with real world programming.
4. Opportunities in allied businesses -- many friends that I know,
that were ex-GSoC students, who continued their open source
contributions, are lucky to be paid to work on their favorite open
source projects. Open source projects now usually have a commercial
wing, and they are always seeking good programmers. What's a better
place to look, than the project's developer pool itself.
5. You fix your own problem! If you work on an open source project
that you use frequently, you are really fixing your own problem,
and making better software for yourself.

I believe mentors are also paid, but very less, like 500$ . I am not 100%
sure, but I asked some of my friends who know some mentors.

+1 Akarsh Simha .... I think we all made good relationship with our project
community during GSoC and this the only precious earning of this program.
After GSOC, contribution is the only way to sustain this relationship :)

No, the $500 is paid to the mentoring organization, not the mentors. The organization might intern decide to pay some fraction of that amount to the mentor, but google doesn't directly pay anything to the mentors.
