At 1700 today, NWS made Tropical Storm Alberto the first named storm of the 2012 Atlantic season.  Alberto is off the coast of South Carolina.  No watches or warnings have been issued, but could be issued as early as tonight for South Carolina.  The current projection is for the storm to stay offshore and pass Hatteras in about 3 days with peak winds around 50 sustained around the center of the storm.

It is not expected that this storm will become very powerful.  It is also expected that the storm will stay offshore.  However, it is not normal to have a named storm off the east coast this early in the season.  That and the fact that forecast models are just initializing on this system make the forecast a bit less reliable than usual.

At this point, I do not expect hospital operations to be impacted in any manner.  However, things could change over the next 2 - 4 days.  I will closely monitor the system.

I will update again midday tomorrow.

NHC has issued an update on Alberto as of 1100 today and NWS in Morehead City issued an update as of noon.

Current forecasts call for Alberto to pass offshore Tuesday as a minimal storm.  Limited impacts are expected for the OBX.  Possible ocean overwash in the Mirlo Beach area, rip currents, gusty winds (heavier near Hatteras than north of Oregon Inlet), rain.  Soundside flooding is NOT expected.

I will update again midday tomorrow unless the forecast changes significantly.  Then I will update sooner.

Thanks
