Dear Oscar and Fernanda,

We hope this email reaches you well in sunny Brazil!  We are writing for several reasons.  First, we would like to, again, extend our sincere gratitude for your thoughtful comments on our project and coordinating the workshop with NEPHU.  The last two weeks were full of enriching and informative experiences that are indispensible for furthering our research as a group.

Secondly, we are interested in continuing our partnership beyond the scope of our coursework in New York.  The work of UN HABITAT with NEPHU and Petrobras is critical for maintaining and furthering the capacity of CONLESTE to address regional impacts of Comperj.  As such, a group of Columbia students are excited at the opportunity to continue working on this important project over the summer and beyond.

We see ourselves as worthwhile and long-term additions to your team.  Our familiarity with the issues at hand, our position as international planners as well as our experience in multi-scalar and metropolitan regional planning would allow us to create a permanent addition to your work.

Given our enthusiasm and investment in this project, we would like to find a role in your work as summer interns.  Thus, where could we best fit into the work of UN HABITAT and its partnerships over this summer?

If this is a possibility, we are kindly asking for some feedback on how you envision our roles in this process.  We understand that UN HABITAT would not be able to fund internships.  As such, we are independently seeking funding for internships.  Your articulation of our role would make a stronger case for us and is imperative to receiving the necessary funds.

Please let us know any further information you might need.  We know you are very busy, but we have several deadlines this Friday for funding opportunities.  Any information you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

We are looking forward to hearing from you in the near future!

Grande abraço,

The Columbia Rio Team

This is a good letter.
I would translate it into Spanish as well, so that Oscar can fully participate in the dialogue.

BTW, a similar letter could be sent to Regina and Fernanda Sanchez at NEPHU.
Please cc me in all your correspondence.

Thanks,
CI
