I just received my new GS-911 (from a seller in china: http://www.AUobd2.com)

Initially it was working, a bit anyway, it would pass the interface
test at least. I was just trying it out on my desktop system. It was
working at first, but was failing to allow me to register it in my
name however.

But when I tried it with my notebook computer, it kinda died. Now it
always gives the message ... (here is a link to a screen shot of the
error message)

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/200071/failure%20of%20gs911.JPG

I get this same message on both of my computers.

I paid around $250 to the Chinese outfit and they shipped it out right
away next day delivery via DHL, for free.

Please don't just tell me that one gets what one pays for. :)

Indeed, you got what you paid for.

You just bought a counterfeit GS-911.
There is no support whatsoever from Hexcode for counterfeit GS-911 devices.

The official distributors are listed here:
http://www.hexcode.co.za/resellers

I only can advise you to try to get your money back from the seller and buy
an original GS-911

Best,

Jos

No need to. You've already proven it.

Which raises a good point:

Other than shopping from the list of authorized resellers, could you
folks create a page to help consumers identify the differences between
a real and counterfeit GS-911? That might help guys in the future who
think they have just stumbled on a little discount.

As someone who has been dealing with this kind of thing for a lot more
years than the GS-911 guys, I can say the problem with doing that is
it would also help the pirate cloners make an even better replica.

But here's a hint: Hex Diagnostics products are not made in China (or
anywhere else in the Far East for that matter). Thus if someone in
the Far East is selling them for less than you can buy them from an
official source, you can be confident that you're not getting a real
one.

To the OP: If you paid for that item using PayPal, you'll find that
they are pretty helpful in such situations, especially when you point
out that the seller provided you with a pirated, counterfeit product.

hi Rick

What you purchased is a counterfeit/clone of HEX's copyrighted hardware and software. Possession or trading of such products is illegal. Our advice would be to return the item to the seller and demand a full refund. You should also report the seller to law enforcement for prosecution.
The genuine article can be purchased directly from our online shop:
 http://www.hexcode.co.za/shop
or from any of our Resellers/Distributors:
 http://www.hexcode.co.za/resellers
The above Resellers might have their own resellers. If the reseller is NOT on the list, inquire who their Distributor is, AND double check with that Distributor!

Yes, from the reports we have gained, these counterfeit devices seem to be of very poor quality... an don't seem to last very long... Connection problems with the poor quality connector, to internal issues and memory that seems to fail.

best,
Stephan

We do have one
 http://www.hexcode.co.za/products/gs-911/counterfeit

However, as Uwe has pointed out, the more differences one points out, the more effort the cloners/counterfeiters put in to make is look even more alike!  And no matter what we do in terms of pointing out differences, you will only know about them once you have already purchased a counterfeit device...

We have pretty strict rules and regulations, governing out resellers, and promotional discounts have to be OK'd by us first, before they may be applied... Hence, the golden rule applies : If is seems to good to be true... it probably is!

We do NOT manufacture in the Far East or China, and if you see anyone selling a device from there, for a price distinctly lower than the official retail price, then you can be quite sure that you're seeing a Counterfeit product.  I know as humans, the need to pursue a bargain is engrained... and to resist a potential good bargain goes against our capitalistic lifestyle, but that is what these Counterfeiters count on...  So beware!

Naturally we cannot and will not support any counterfeit use of our hardware or software. We have spent countless man-hours developing this product, and are still in the process of improving it and are continuously adding functionality, and for someone to come and make a counterfeit copy thereof using our copyrighted hardware and software, and selling it as if it were ours, is as illegal as it is morally wrong... And using such a counterfeit device, reflects the same moral fiber...

best,
Stephan

All what Stephan and others said...
and a bit more:
IF you paid with a "international" credit card or by "PayPal" you may well have it all refunded to your account.
All serious "banking" systems do NOT accept frauds like that and will usually refund fully!!
Do not hesitate to file a complaint!!
