matplotlib (PyLab) and Shapely / Rtree
Shapely is a GIS implementation based on GEOS -> Geos is the GIS
backend behind PostGis (The Postgres Geographic Search Module)
If anyone is interested in me doing a talk or explaining how you can
use the tools together to do dimensional searches and plot the results
I'd be happy to share my experience over the last couple weeks.
Both of the tools require a decently high learning curve and although
both tools are documented fairly well - the examples are usually
underwhelming or overwhelming so it can be a struggle to get started.

This sounds really cool; always wanted to know more about PostGIS but
I've never had the time to tear into it.

+1 When I browsed around the examples I find were so "Hello World"
they weren't very enlightening.
