With the installation of Growl 1.2, GrowlMail refuses to install. It
keeps giving me an error that says, "The installer could not install
some files in '/temp/GrowlMail-Installation-Temp". Contact the
software manufacturer for assistance."

I searched the Internet and found a handful of folks who encountered
the same problem. In those instances, they repaired permissions and
the installation was successful. I repaired my permissions but no go.

Try this in the Terminal:

ls -dl /tmp /tmp/GrowlMail-Installation-Temp

(Note: It's /tmp, not /temp.)

It returns this:

iMac:~ iMac$ ls -dl /tmp /tmp/GrowlMail-Installation-Temp
lrwxr-xr-x@ 1 root admin 11 Aug 14 2008 /tmp -> private/tmp
drwxr-xr-x 2 iMac wheel 68 Oct 3 22:19 /tmp/GrowlMail-Installation-

Are you trying to install from a different account than “iMac”?

No. In fact, and as "risky" as it may be, I only have one account on
this machine.

After the installation fails:

1. Choose “Installer Log” from the Window menu.
2. Set the Detail Level to “All Messages”.
3. Select All.
4. Copy.

Then paste what you copied into your reply to this message.

this is the interesting part of the log, the GrowlMail-Installation-
Temp doesn't seem to actually be the issue.

it looks like you might want to try repairing permissions using disk
utility, for whatever reason your previous install of GrowlMail
resulted in a package receipt being owned by root instead of 501 (your
user account). your other option would be to try purging the
GrowlMail.pkg from /Library/Receipts and run the install again.

Neither of these suggestions worked. Thanks for getting back to me so
quickly. Hate to lose Growl Mail, I hope there's a fix if a future
update if enough people are experiencing the issue.

Sorry Peter, completely misread that you were the initial person
helping me out. Thanks to both you and Rudy for the suggestions. I
failed to mention I'm running 10.5.8 and things were working pre the
update. Kaijin, did you recently update to 10.5.8 and then GrowlMail
stopped working or did things just stop working all of a sudden? And
I'm running Growl 1.2. I really can't recall the order of the
upgrades. But I upgraded the OS and Growl on the same day and can't
recall if GrowlMail stopped working after the OS upgrade or the Growl
upgrade.

Thanks again.

Daye,

I have used GrowlMail successfully in the past. I didn't recently
upgrade to 10.5.8, nor did I update the OS and Growl on the same day.

I did not experience issues with GrowlMail until converting from POP
to IMAP access in Mail.app. (I didn't upgrade to Growl 1.2 and set-up
IMAP access on the same day). After converting from POP to IMAP, I
noticed I had stopped receiving GrowlMail notifications. (I had
disabled GrowlMail notifications while Mail.app imported all my
messages into the new IMAP account inbox. When I re-enabled GrowlMail,
no notifications appeared for new, arriving Inbox messages). I
uninstalled GrowlMail and reinstalled using the Extras >
GrowlMail .pkg bundled with Growl 1.2. Strangely, I was prompted for
an admin password, then I received the error message. After repairing
permissions and a restart, I'm no longer prompted for an admin
password, but the install still fails with the same error message
displayed.

Kaijin.

Strange.

I finally got some time to get on my laptop. I upgraded to 10.5.8 but
I did not upgrade Growl, I'm still running 1.1.5 and installed
GrowlMail just fine. It's working as it should. I uninstalled Growl
1.2 and installed an older version, 1.1.4, and then installed
GrowlMail and everything is working correctly on my desktop again. It
seems to be the Growl 1.2 upgrade that's the issue. I suggest
uninstalling and then dowloading 1.1.6 from their site and see if that
works.

Hopefully more people chime in and the Growl guys (unfortunate for
them) come up with a fix or an update.

Thanks
-daye.

daye,

I kept Growl 1.2 and used the GrowlMail-Leopard.mpkg from the Growl
1.1.6 Extras. The installation was successful and I'm now receiving
Growl notifications for incoming mail. It appears as though the issue
is with the GrowlMail packaged with Growl 1.2—or at least how that
installer package interacts with Growl 1.2.

The GrowlMail in the package has nothing to do with anything if you
can't install it, and the GrowlMail package does not interact with
Growl in any way.

Peter,

Any thoughts on why the GrowlMail-Leopard.mpkg included with Growl
1.1.6 installs properly, but the GrowlMail.pkg included with Growl 1.2
doesn't install for certain users?

None, except that it's probably related to Installer deciding it's
smarter than I am and asking you for an admin password after I told it
not to.
