I'm using gmail to filter some messages to trash, but growlmail still popsup notifications of new messages straight from the trash. would this be considered a bug?

They're probably showing up in All Mail. There's not much we can do about that, since that mailbox isn't special as far as Mail is concerned.

Have you looked at the growlmail preferences to only get notified for emails to your inbox?

If you set your IMAP path prefix to [Gmail] and then enable 'Only notify for emails in your Inbox' in GrowlMail, I believe you'll get the desired behavior.
