I need to add the ability to send real Growl notifications from my web application. From my research, it sounds like this is possible by using Flash and GNTP, but will only work for Growl 1.3+. I know that there are some Flash libraries with JavaScript hooks. Are there any libraries available that allow you to push Growl notifications using JavaScript through Flash?

...or if you have any better ideas!

Hello Andrew,

You are correct that the GNTP from Flash route is Growl.app 1.3+ only, however, 1.2.x and older on Mac's did not support any (to my knowledge) method for  a web app to communicate with it.  As for javascript, http://www.growlforwindows.com/gfw/developers.aspx lists a Javascript api (I believe it uses flash to actually communicate), which I believe should work.  This has the added benefit of being cross platform friendly, as Growl for Windows also supports GNTP, and the flash library.

Sorry, I failed to mention that I need this to work on a Mac. I think that's why I avoided the GfW javascript/flash option. Also 1.2.x support would be nice, but probably unrealistic, and cross-platform support is more important (which I think where GNTP really shines). Also, it looks like the GfW js/flash option linked to on their website is not using GNTP which sort of defeats the purpose for me.

I was able to get some Ruby libraries to work locally, but that really doesn't solve my problem, since I need the browser to communicate with the client directly, not through the server (avoiding the issues of firewalls and static IP addresses).

Any Flash GNTP options with javascript hooks that you know of?

I found this with a bit of googling (it wasn't an immediate hit on the googles). It looks pretty new

Would that work for you?

The Flash/JavaScript system listed at Growl are indeed GNTP, and do too work with Mac (Growl 1.3+) and Growl for Windows.

See http://www.growlforwindows.com/gfw/examples/js/ for an example implementation, which I can confirm works on my Mac.

Confirmed to work here as well.

I think you should give it a try on a test mac Andrew. :)
