Our next scheduled meeting is on 12/13, next month especially, we want
to be sensitive to the fact that people maybe traveling and/or out of
town. Therefore, we wanted to get a general idea from the mailing list
if people were planning to attend?

Scheduled topic: 12/13 - GUM Fishbowl - 5 empty chairs and then the
moderator asks for volunteers to start the discussion

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fishbowl_(conversation)

Conversation starters:
- What has been your biggest Grails/Groovy pain point lately? Bring
your toughest question.
- What has been your biggest development productivity gain for 2011?
- Grails Hosting / Deployment / CI
- What interesting projects OS or otherwise are you working on in
Groovy/Grails/JVM?
GUM specific questions:
- What presentation topics would you be interested in hearing talks on
in 2012?
- Have the topics been to advanced for someone just starting with
Groovy/Grails? Does a Groovy only focus still make sense?
- How do we attract more people to the group?
- As the GUM usergroup, how can we help out with the local GR8 conf?
http://gr8conf.org

Other ideas or conversation starters? Your feedback is greatly
appreciated.

Cheers,
Eric

p.s. We have a few talks scheduled for early 2012 but we could always
use more volunteers. Drop us an email if you have topic ideas.

I have not attended before, but I was planning to attend.  I am fairly new to Groovy, but I have been working with Java since '95.

Hello Eric,

Since you asked...

> in 2012?

> - How do we attract more people to the group?

Since
I've only been to one GUM and am still a Groovy and Grails n00b, I'd be
very interested newbie topics, such as...
- A panel discussion to answer frequent newbie questions
- Why Groovy and Grails are groovy
- An introduction to Groovy for newbies
- An introduction to Grails for newbies

My 2 cents,
Andrew P. Tasi

Hi Guys,

I wanted to send a new full-time Java/Grails development I have with a division of HealthPartners called Virtuell.  Virtuell is a mobile apps research and development arm that has been developing prototype self diagnostic health applications for iPhone and Android.  I am including a job description below.  I would love to speak with anyone who may have interest in this, and if you refer me to someone who i end up placing here, i will give you an iPad 2 with 3G ($850 value).  Thanks, Guys!

  • 2 step interview process with lead developer, then a team interview
  • Back-end development understanding a big plus – scripting tools, Ruby, Grails, knowing how your code writing is impacting the architecture
  • Any mobile, jQuery and web 2.0 a plus

Things to interest the candidate:

  • Using state of the art technologies
  • Small development team
  • Start-up culture – casual, jeans, t-shirt
  • Flexible hours on start time and 1 day from home/week
  • Next project is mobile web project

The culture at HealthPartners is one of ownership, pride, service, and most importantly, partnership. That spirit of partnership among employees, and with patients and the community is just one of the many reasons we were recently named one of the Twin Cities best places to work by the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal.  Join us for a career that offers respect, support and encouragement.  You’ll stay for the power of partnership.

We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Web developer intermediate to assist the web development team in creating technology based solutions by developing, implementing, and maintaining the virtuwell website and provider and reporting applications. The www.virtuwell.com is an online diagnosis and treatment service that is powered by software that asks simple questions about symptoms and medical history.  The answers are presented to a certified nurse practitioner who completes a personal diagnosis and writes a personalized treatment plan. The web developer will work with other developers on production support as well as new development projects.  This person will work primarily in Groovy, Java, and Javascript.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field.
• Minimum of 2-4 years experience with Java enterprise applications
• Ability to work proactively with minimal supervision
• Excellent time management skills.
• Availability to be on-call 24-7 on a rotating basis

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience with production support
• Experience with Grails
• Prefer experience in full life cycle development; requirements gathering, technical design, iterative development, testing and implementation.
• Knowledge of healthcare industry.

Steve,

There are at least 4 other folks that are involved in Virtuwell on this list (please note the spelling).

The posting is relevant to the GUM list, but hijacking a thread is considered rude.  This isn't the first time you've done this.  Please start a new thread if you are posting relevant opportunities.

Thank you,

Colin Harrington
colin.ha...@gmail.com

PS GUMmers: There are other ways to follow up on this opportunity (hint, hint, wink wink...)

I sincerely apologize, Colin, and the ommission of the "w" was an honest typo mistake.  I certainly did not mean to try to deceive anyone by replying to a thread, so again, I am really sorry.  I have been working on and off with Senthil for over a year, and we have had several Java consultants with HP over the years and have very strong relationships with people like Pete, Ashish and Ron, so I was honestly just trying to spread the word about a very difficult to fill position.  Please accept my apology for the breach in protocal, and I will not take this approach in the future, but will try to be more respectful to the group.
